Abisola was hoping that it wouldn't take long for Alex to call back. She had nurtured the idea of destroying the dossier but wanted him to see it, first. By showing it to him and then handing it over, she would free herself of the repercussions that could come with holding onto such an important document.
She was aware of the fact that the information in her possession was valuable, and could attract unscrupulous individuals who would stop at nothing just to lay their hands on it. And so for the next one hour she waited for Alex to call, but he never called back. He was in a meeting with his employer and the other two men that had accompanied his employer.
They wanted an update on the mission in Port Harcourt. They knew the mission had failed but wanted to know what really happened.
"Sir, I can only tender my sincerest apologies for the failure of the mission. We had no idea that Shedrach would boycott the meeting. I guess it was a last minute decision." Alex looked at all three men who then whispered amongst themselves. After a while, his employer turned to him and said,
"The man we asked you to replace, is it the same man you sent after Shedrach?" Alex cleared his throat as he looked at all three men. In previous meetings, they had told him to replace Tony. However, he had convinced them that Tony was still reliable. Since the mission had failed, he had to defend his reputation.
"Sir, I made extensive preparations so that the mission would succeed."
"Alex that is not the question I asked you." Said the employer."I know sir. But please allow me to explain myself." His employer glanced at the other two men and nodded his head.
"Very well, go ahead." Alex sighed and did his best to describe the preparation as if he had sat down with Tony, Sarah and Bisi and talked to them on the specific roles they would play.
"Thank you, sir. Like I said, I made very extensive preparations for the mission to succeed. Replacing Tony in the shortest time, wasn't possible. That was at least until I found someone more reliable, for future operations. However, he wasn't alone. So to guarantee the success of the mission, I had to send out two other people. This was to make sure that if he didn't succeed, at least one of the other two people would get the job done. Except, I think Shedrach fooled everyone since he didn't show up at the press conference."
"And how do you explain that?"
"Sorry, sir I don't understand."
"What he's trying to say," said one of the other men, " is, why didn't you know that Shedrach would have changed his plans at the dying minute?" Alex had a hard time understanding how Shedrach could have changed his plan and not attend the press conference."Ehm, I think it was unexpected and..."
"Or is it that he got a last minute tip that scared him off from attending the conference?" Alex's eyes widened in shock. He had not even put into consideration the fact that Shedrach could have been informed beforehand about a possible hit on him.
"Sir to be honest it didn't cross my mind to think that someone might have given him intel shortly before the press conference."
"And what if someone actually did?" Alex looked dumfounded as he stared blankly at all three men. He didn't know what to tell them as he had no idea what really happened. Tony had not called him and he still had not heard from Sarah, yet. The three men got up with Alex's employer pointing a finger at him."Alex, find out who might have helped Shedrach get away. Because I believe he was tipped off. Find Shedrach too, and get the job done!" The three men left angrily with Alex wondering how he was going to get hold of Shedrach. He had not heard from Tony again since the mission had failed. The last phone call he received from Tony was when Tony said that he had spotted Sarah.
