Muichiro's eyes narrowed, the air around him seemed to darken as a demon was mentioned. All of the previous joy in his tone was gone as he looked back to his crow, carressing her feathery head.
"Ginko, Tadao... Lead the way."
...
After a few hours of following the directions of their crows, the pair of demon slayers finally reached their destination.
The village was deathly quiet, shrouded in a thick layer of fog that enveloped everything as far as the eye could see. Mountains loomed high into the sky on their left, casting an eerie shadow over the seemingly abandoned residence. Shivering gently, Y/n looked to Muichiro.
"There aren't any people about... It's possible we've arrived to late to expect any survivors."
Muichiro nodded in response, not meeting her gaze. His eyes were focused and determined; there was a certain coldness to them that made Y/n feel a little intimidated. When they were on missions, Muichiro was never the talkative type.
Choosing to do the talking for him, Y/n tapped him on the shoulder and pointed towards the south end of the village.
"Let's split up, I'll take the South side. Where will you go?"
"North-west." He stated blankly, before taking off in the blink of an eye. Y/n sighed to herself.
"He really does take his job seriously... Almost to a fault." She mumbled, strolling into the fog with her blade drawn.
A rustle.
Y/n's pulse jumped as she sensed the demon's presence. Her fingertips vibrated lowly, the aura more menacing than she'd ever encountered before. Gripping her sword-hilt, she braced herself for an attack.
"Show yourself, demon!" She hissed, scanning her surroundings over and over. Surprisingly, she saw nothing... With an aura this menacing and a concealment charm this powerful, this could be nothing but an upper rank demon.
Another rustle.
"Who goes there! Quit hiding and fight!" A bead of sweat built on her forehead as she glanced around for her attacker, confusion beginning to bubble inside her. Suddenly, she saw something emerging from the shrubbery that she hadn't expected.
A young girl in a red frock peered out from the bushes, her hair done up in pigtails. Y/n instantly hid her blade behind her back... Although, she knew it would be unwise to sheath it while a demon was still around.
"Hey kiddo, are your parents around here?" Y/n cautiously made her way over to the girl, her muscles flexing and tensing beneath her skin. The child looked to be no older than 8 or 9, her cheeks still rosy and plump like a baby's. Crouching down slightly, the demon slayer examined the girl.
"Are you hurt? It's not safe to be out in the fog by yourself, young lady."
The girl didn't answer. She simply stared at the hashira with her wide, wide blue eyes.
Or were they red?
Y/n didn't have time to figure it out before she felt a stabbing pain in her side, and a force throwing her into the building behind her with a sickening crunch. Blinking the shock out of her eyes, she whipped her head around in search for the little girl.
"Hey, kid! You have to run! It's dangerou-"
Another blow to her stomach made Y/n's insides spin. She gasped for air, her lungs hadn't been braced for impact and she felt the whole force of the attack. Out of the corner of her eye, the hashira could have sworn she saw a dark flash... Yet, when she looked around, there was no demon to be seen.
