Tomeo raised an eyebrow at Kōtarō. His comrade glared at him, and he decided to grab the bag that was right next to him and throw it in his direction.
Kōtarō received it without difficulty and opened it. It didn't take long for him to take out a small pack of around ten cards, roughly held together by an elastic band and a little damaged.
"I didn't think you were playing," Kenji said in surprise.
They raised their heads. Kenji had just entered. He had stayed with his family until now but decided to go see if Kōtarō was okay, overhearing their conversation.
"I would have liked to play a game," he admitted, "but my sisters stole my cards."
"I've never played," Kōtarō grumbled, "I just have a few cards, but I don't want to give them away if I lose, so I don't play."
"It's just a demonstration," Enko said, "so even if you lose, you keep your cards."
Kōtarō grumbled a few incomprehensible words and also took out a small bag containing his token. His were green and marked with the hiragana こ (ko).
"Very simple decoration," Tomeo remarked.
"At least it's not a shapeless piece of meat," Kōtarō growled, glancing at Enko's token.
"A piece of..." exclaimed the young girl, blushing, "I know I'm not as good at drawing as Nana-chan, but still, it's a fetus! I wanted to make tokens related to my power, at least no one will have the same..."
Tomeo had to hold back his laughter. The girl pouted while choosing her five cards. Kōtarō did the same, before inviting their friend to start.
Enko placed a first card, representing Bunny, with the numbers twelve, ten, twelve, nine. Kōtarō looked at his own cards in his hand and placed one of his next to it. His card depicted the heroine Laspis with the stats eleven, thirteen, thirteen, twelve. He placed the card so that one of the numbers thirteen was facing the ten on the Bunny card. He removed Enko's token and placed one of his own in its place.
"It's a pretty rare card," Rakko remarked, "this heroine isn't very well known."
"It's my mother," his friend whispered.
Everyone was silent. Enko, about to place her second card, paused her gesture. Kōtarō gestured to her and she moved again. None of them knew that Laspis was actually Shime Nanako. It was no surprise that Kōtarō refused to lose his cards. They were even more surprised when he put down a card, particularly damaged and even pierced by what seemed to be darts, of Ultrasonic, his father, then, during the last turn, another of Experion. Despite the power of the Experion card, Enko had won the game. Kōtarō seemed to think for a moment then threw the Ultrasonic card towards her.
"Finally, you can take one," he said, "I don't want to see his face any longer."
"I already have at least four copies of it," muttered Enko, "It's one of the most common cards among heroes, but I'll get rid of it for you with pleasure."
The noise coming from the screen interrupted them. Despite the difficulty of fighting an invisible enemy, Morgan Booth had won the duel.
Nakamara's voice on the microphone announced a long break while the next fights were decided.
It took a moment and the small group to take the opportunity to chat. Kenji even brought taiyaki for Kōtarō, so that he could regain his strength. It didn't take long for Fishy to join them, asking them to all go back outside, as the next duels would begin very soon.
Enko took the opportunity to take Nanaya to the stand that sold packs of cards. Eager to try this game, he bought several. Enko promised him that they would play a game after the fights. Unfortunately, he had no card of his father. He also took the opportunity to buy some treats to eat while watching the next match, which he shared with his friends.
The next fight was announced and it was Kōtarō against Rakko.
They both entered the arena. Rakko let out a long sigh. He knew well that Kōtarō was strong and above all, that he did not hold back his blows.
Amaretto then whistled to announce the start of the match.
With one quick movement, Kōtarō immediately took a defensive stance, ready to counter any attack Rakko threw at him. With a hint of hesitation, his comrade lunged forward, throwing a series of rapid punches and kicks towards him. Kōtarō effortlessly dodged Rakko's assault, slipping into the spaces between the incoming strikes. With each dodge, he countered with precision, delivering quick, calculated blows to his comrade's vulnerable spots. Kōtarō's strikes were like needles, piercing Rakko's defenses, leaving him momentarily stunned.
However, Rakko was not one to be easily defeated and he recovered, preferring to stand back for a moment to catch his breath, before attacking again.
Time seemed to stand still as the battle raged, the combatants pushing past their physical limits. Sweat was streaming down their faces, their muscles were tense with effort, and yet neither showed the slightest sign of giving up.
Every strike and block was executed with precision and determination, as if engaged in a deadly dance. With a fierce roar, Rakko summoned the full strength of his body, channeling it into a powerful roundhouse kick that sent Kōtarō flying. But the fight did not end there. Kōtarō caught himself on his hands and, in an impressive pirouette, sent a kick directly to Rakko's face. A devastating blow that sent Rakko crashing to the ground, defeated and stunned.
Amaretto moved forward to make sure Rakko was good, quickly followed by Phen-X. The future hero was unconscious but had no serious injuries. Kōtarō took the time to join them to make sure he hadn't been too strong. He didn't hold back his strength at all for this last blow. Once reassured about his comrade's condition, he returned to the locker room without worrying about the thunderous applause outside.
The next fight was Rena against Morgan. Both had a rather danceable style and the result was particularly captivating. Their fight could almost have resembled a ballet as they fought so gracefully, but fiercely.
Much to Mineko's delight, her girlfriend emerged victorious once again. But the realization that came next made her suddenly lose her excitement. After a well-deserved break, the final fight of this tournament would pit Rena against Kōtarō.
