Jaden was trapped in a nightmare he just couldn't escape from. He returned to his friends and to Duel Academy, only to find himself in a battle for a unique card, losing his friends one by one to the World of Darkness, the return of Nightshroud's influence, fighting in a tournament to catch an agent of the entity, which turned out to be one of his friends, beginning a war in his old school, being possessed more than once and now he was watching helplessly as another of his friends fell to Nightshroud and the woman who had just professed her love for him was being held captive in a cage of shadows.
"ALEXIS!" cried Jaden.
"JADEN!" shrieked Alexis.
Jaden tried to stand up to save her but he collapsed, still physically weakened by his recent possession.
"How amusing," sneered Nightshroud, "the great hero of mankind reduced to grovelling before the Darkness for mercy."
"I...will never...grovel to you!" snapped Jaden strenuously.
"You will never stop me either," pointed out Nightshroud, "you don't have it in you!"
"But I do!"
Syrus stood between Jaden and Nightshroud, priming his Duel Disk.
Nightshroud roared in laughter.
"The cowardly best friend of the real hero? You cannot face anyone without shaking in your boots. It's all there in your darkest of memories, Syrus Truesdale!"
"I am not a coward, not anymore! You took my brother from me! I will get him back or fall trying! And trust me, I have no intention of doing the latter!"
"Bring it on, for this will be the last heroic action you will perform!"
Nightshroud seemed like he was about to prime his own Duel Disk made of shadows, but then...
"Your bravery does not equal my power! BEGONE!"
Nightshroud suddenly shot a dark ball of Darkness energy in Syrus' direction.
"SYRUS!"
"RETREAT, SOLDIER!"
Hassleberry ran up to Syrus and charged at him as fast as he could.
As Hassleberry shoved Syrus away, he didn't have enough time to fend off the Darkness Ball himself and was struck hard, blasted backwards and left sprawled on the ground.
"HASSLEBERRY!"
Syrus rose up again and rushed to his rescuer.
"Why, Tyranno?!"
"So...you could...be there for our...Sarge! He needs ya," whispered Hassleberry.
"He needs you too! So do I!"
"Then y'all need to free me from this World of Darkness before the night is out...just forward march and trample that...Nightshroud enemy!"
"We will," moaned Jaden, who had managed to reach Hassleberry, whilst being supported by Jesse.
Hassleberry smiled.
"You can do it, Sarge...you can beat the Darkness...!"
Hassleberry lost the remainder of his strength and collapsed his head as the Darkness aura carried him away into the World of Darkness, following Chazz.
"Hassleberry..."
"YOU EVIL BEAST!" shouted Syrus with tears in his eyes. "WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS?! WHY CAN'T YOU JUST LEAVE US BE?! WHY CAN'T YOU BE ANYTHING BUT DARKNESS?!"
