Chapter 27: A New Nightshroud Threat

Things at Duel Academy were quiet and desolate. All the students that Chazz had infected with Darkness were sitting in wait, continuing their lessons as usual. The staff were either teaching or posted as sentries to the buildings. Damon was still regarding the forests with Wheeler, and Belowski stood atop the main Academy building, trying not to sleep. He was still upset about the loss of Crowler. 

Alexis was patrolling, hoping that Chancellor Sheppard was returning soon. He and Maximillion Pegasus were still looking for Superintendent Kagemaru, whom was still unbeknown to them, stuck alone and uncared for on the ship where Syrus had been tortured. 

Alexis was just circling round the main building when she saw something ahead, beyond the trees and over the horizon. Belowski saw it too. It seemed to be like fog...only the fog was as black as smoke, the darkest smoke in living memory... 

"This can't be good." said Alexis softly. 

"Woah." yawned Belowski. 

Alexis rushed to the Obelisk Blue dorm, where she knew Atticus, Yusuke and Honest were guarding the students. 

"Atticus! Yusuke!" she called. "Have you seen that fog up ahead?" 

Both friends were distinctively pale. Honest looked foreboding. 

"That isn't fog, Miss Alexis." said Honest graciously. "It's Darkness. It's swarming towards the Academy!" 

"Nightshroud." groaned Alexis, Atticus and Yusuke all at once. 

"We must warn the others." said Alexis. 

"And fight this Darkness. It must manifest into something." said Atticus. 

"You two go on ahead. Honest and I will remain protecting the students." said Yusuke. 

"Thanks, bud." said Atticus. "Lexi, come on." 

Both siblings rushed off to the main building and hoped to have enough time to warn Hassleberry, Axel and Jim along the way. 

Yusuke and Honest remained vigilant, although their defences were now lessened. They still maintained confidence in their combined power. 

The Darkness was coming closer to the quay. Nobody was situated there, as the Academy and its students were the primary concern. 

At the Ra Yellow Dorm, Hassleberry and Professor Sartyr were maintaining their posts, but were aware of the Darkness fog approaching slowly but surely. 

"Is there no way of stopping this?" asked Sartyr. 

"No go." said Hassleberry. "It's that darn Nightshroud, alright, and we need to be prepared to fend off his Dark World!" 

At the Slifer Red Dorm, Axel and Jim also saw the Darkness, and Shirley was growling. 

"You think this fog is part of the war, mate?" asked Jim. 

"I believe so." replied Axel. "We must battle fiercely to protect the Slifers. They are apparently, the weaker duelists here, so they'll need the stronger security." 

Both friends primed their Duel Disks preparedly. 

The Darkness itself was now in the quay, but just as it did, a helicopter landed there. Chancellor Sheppard had finally returned after his searching with Pegasus. He was horrified at the sight before him. But he also saw that the Darkness was one big cloud, surrounding the whole island. It was part of a trap by Nightshroud, no doubt, thought Sheppard. 

"I must go and help protect the students and the staff and...Miss Dorothy!" 

Sheppard paced his way through the forest route to the Academy. He was determined to help save everyone concerned. He didn't know that a guard had already been prepared in his absence.
