Jaden led the retreat party. None of them were aware that Zorath had retreated and his army of Nightshroud possessed students were now slowly but surely in pursuit.
Jaden was also unaware that in the rush to escape, he had grabbed the hand of Alexis, guiding her as he ran. She was as red as his old uniform, and so was Chazz, who was running a little behind, looking both enraged and rejected.
Syrus could see this and hoped that this would not re-spark his Darkness. He planned to keep a close eye on him.
Soon, the combined company of Jaden, Alexis, Syrus, Chazz, Mindy, Jasmine and Atticus, the latter pair also hand in hand, reached the roof.
"Well...that went well," panted Jaden as he let go of Alexis' hand, blushing himself.
"We ran away...we should have taken him on, Jaden!" snapped Chazz.
"He nearly took out Atticus and Jasmine!" replied Jaden. "If they couldn't fare against him together, how could we?"
"Are you seriously comparing yourselves to me?" laughed Atticus. "You two are in a whole different league compared to me! By the way, which of you won the tournament?"
Chazz begrudgingly pointed at Jaden, whom remained modestly silent for his rival's sake.
"Congratulations, pal!" praised Atticus.
"There's always next year, Chazzie!" added Mindy, noticing Chazz's despondence.
"Uh, thanks, Mindy," replied Chazz dismissively.
Mindy blushed and Jasmine smirked at her, whilst still holding Atticus' hand. He did not let go of hers either. It was plain for all to see that the past hour had sparked the beginning of something very special between the two of them, and no-one was more surprised or delighted than Alexis. One of her best friends and her brother? Her friend could become her...
"Where are the others?" asked Jaden.
"Others?" asked Atticus, slightly distracted by Jasmine's touch.
"Hassleberry, Axel, Jim and all the others who were willing to help us protect the Academy!" Jaden replied, sounding worried.
"...We haven't seen them since this breakout," admitted Alexis. "Jim and Axel were protecting the Slifer Dorm, Hassleberry and Professor Sartyr were in charge of the Ra Dorm."
"And...I left the Blue Dorm in Yusuke's hands," said Atticus concernedly.
"If they haven't made it here, they could be lost to the Darkness," murmured Jasmine.
"We have lost people for certain, sadly," added Alexis.
"Who?!" asked Jaden, turning pale.
"Miss Dorothy was turned into a Darkness card," explained Alexis, "and it sparked Chancellor Sheppard's Darkness. He's now one of those zombies downstairs."
Jaden frowned, trying not to let despair wash over him. Miss Dorothy too...the kindest staff member in all of Duel Academy, dragged into a war that wasn't hers to fight...
"And Adrian and Echo showed up," said Alexis sadly.
"And?"
"And they saved me at the cost of their own safety...Sheppard turned them into Darkness cards."
Jaden's head pounded, and he could hear Yubel and the Supreme King...arguing.
He knew. He knew that the Supreme King was succumbing and therefore trying to control him...but he couldn't let that happen.
