At Domino City, the Pro League tournament was nearly ready to get underway. Jaden and Syrus were amongst the thirty two chosen duelists ready and waiting to learn who they would face in the championship.
The tournament would play out as follows. The qualifier would divide the duelists by two via elimination leaving sixteen duelists, then a second qualifier to the finals would occur leaving a total of eight. Then the quarter finals would end with four semi-finalists and finally the climactic duel that would end up with a duelist being named the Pro League champion duelist.
Jaden and Syrus were aware that for either one of them to win, they and Jesse may well have to take each other on in a duel, but that wasn't the key reason for them to duel in this tournament. They still had to expose the unknown servant of Nightshroud.
"Any suspects from the list?" asked Syrus.
"Not really." replied Jaden, "Aside from Chazz, Aster, Missy, Jesse and Chazz's brothers, we don't know any of these other duelists. It could be any one of them."
"Including those we know?" asked Syrus.
"Hmm, if it were one of those we know, I would put my deck on the brothers." answered Jaden, "They are cruel and twisted enough to have joined forces with Nightshroud willingly."
"Then we need to keep a closer eye on those two." said Syrus.
Just then, a commentator appeared.
"Ladies and gentlemen! May I have your attention, please! Now we are going to kick off this Pro League tournament with an unveiling of the qualifier play-offs!"
"We're going to learn our first opponents straightaway?" said Jaden quietly.
"Yep! Adds to the excitement right from the start." smiled Syrus, a little nervous of the possibility of having to duel his best friends.
"And here are our contenders and who they will be facing off against in the first qualifier!" declared the commentator.
Jaden and Syrus looked up and found that the first qualifier round lasted for two days, eight duels on each day. Jaden found that he was duelling on the second day against a duelist known as Jay Quinzel in the third duel. Jesse was also duelling on the same day in the following day against Cassandra Peterson.
Syrus saw that his opponent was more familiar. He would be duelling on the first day in the seventh duel against Missy, the Obelisk Blue he had slowed down in reaching the Pro Leagues back at Duel Academy. But he and Jaden were all the more surprised at Chazz's opponent on the first day in the eighth duel...it was his brother, Jagger.
"Awkward or what?" murmured Jaden to Syrus, whom only nodded in awe.
They both looked over to Chazz, whom looked deeply angered. This was a clear sign that he had Darkness in him, but this was well shrouded by the fact that Jaden and Syrus understood his disdain towards his two brothers who had publicly disowned and humiliated him some years ago, leaving him with an unclear future. They therefore found this animosity understandable.
"We start tomorrow then, Jaden." said Syrus, avoiding the uncomfortable subject.
"Yep." replied Jaden, snapping back to the tournament, "Well, you don't duel until tomorrow afternoon at 4pm."
Then Jaden had a cheerful idea.
"I think, before your duel, I'll pass the time by paying Blair a visit. She's apparently in the next city. It's on her online diary."
"Why?" asked Syrus.
"Don't know. She says in her diary that she is staying for quite a while, whilst her parents are travelling the world for half a year. They gave her quite the allowance! Maybe she'll buy me a hot dog for old times' sake!"
