HAPPYS POV
Today is Meghan's second surgery. The team decides to visit her in the hospital since it's Memorial Day. Toby, Jess and I are the first ones at the hospital we wait in the waiting area for the team to get here. Suddenly Jess starts crying, I pick her up and carry her around outside for a while until the team gets here. Jess stops crying so I carry her inside, the team is already there waiting for me, I didn't even see them walk in. We walk down to her room together and smile as we see that she is already awake, she is reading the book 'Pascal'.
"Hey Meg." I say sitting down. She jumps a bit.
"Oh I didn't even hear you come in." She says placing her book down on the small night stand next to her that is over crowded with pills and medication.
"You brought Jess. Can I hold her?" She says smiling a bit.
"No, your on so much drugs right now, you'll drop her." Toby says from behind me, I punch him in the arm and he winces.
"Actually I'm not on any medication right now." She says shaking her head.
"You just got out of surgery, you have to have some kind of drug in you." Toby responds.
"Nope. I mean they gave me some while I was unconscious during the surgery, but none after." She replies.
"I'm talking to he doctors." Toby says walking towards the door.
"No Toby it wasn't the doctors choice, it was mine." She responds smiling a tiny bit.
"What? why?"
"I'm not a medicine person, I'm fine, I don't need it. It's just and excuse for the doctors to feel in power and drug people. Now can I hold Jess?" Meghan responds getting annoyed. I hand Jesse gently to Meghan and Meg smiles as Jesse giggles.
"But you really should be on some kind of medication." Walter says. She shakes her head.
"Nah." She says looking down at Jesse.
"Anyway happy Memorial Day!" Paige says happily. This is the only holiday we actually celebrate, so it's pretty important to us.
"Can I ask you guys a favor?" Meghan asks.
"Sure, what is it?" Sylvester asks.
"Can you take me to my dads grave?" She asks quietly looking down at Jesse.
"You just got out of surgery, I don't believe we could do that." Walt replies. She presses the button that calls the nurse and she comes in immediately.
"Yes?" She says popping her head into the room a large smile tugging at her lips.
"Am I allowed to leave for just 2-3 hours?" Meghan asks sadly. She is a really good actress.
"I don't think we can do that, you just got out of surgery." The nurse responds sympathetically.
"Just three hours."
"I don't think-"
"What about if she goes in the wheel chair?" I ask cutting her off.
"And she take all her medication." Walt adds. Meghan glares at me then Walter.
"If you promise to take your medication, go in the wheel chair, eat all your lunch and take an oxygen tank, then I think we can let you go, but only for three hours." The nurse replies.
"I can breathe fine." Meghan says rolling her eyes.
"Would you like to take out the breathing tubes?" The nurse asks. Meghan takes the breathing tubes out of her nose, she tries to breathe but ends up gasping for air. She quickly puts the tubes back in.
"Fine, I'll take the tank." She says becoming calm now that she can breathe again.
"Ok I'll be right back with your wheel chair, when I come back all those pills better be gone." The nurse says smiling and walking away.
"God I'm going to be high when I leave this place." Meghan says taking a handful of pills.
"Why do you want to visit your dads grave?" Toby asks her in a relaxed tone. Meg swallows her pills and says
"Well since he was in the military I figured I should pay my respects." The nurse comes in only a few moments later with a wheel chair. Toby and Walt help her into the wheel chair and she winces at their touch, I guess the medication hasn't kicked in yet. Once she is in the wheel chair we make our way out to the van, people stare at Meghan the whole time. She keeps her head in her hands and doesn't move. We all get in the car and head down to the cemetery. When we get there Toby and Walt help Meghan out of the car slowly, even though Meghan is urgent to get going. Once she is settled she wheels herself to a little she'd like thing where a man tells us where the grave is. When we find the grave the team steps back and let's Meghan admire the beautiful grave. It is a cross shaped grave that reads:
' Here lies the body of Tanner Alexander Jacobs
Father, brother, son
Veteran
Years: 1969-2015
Tanner Jacobs was much more then a father, brother and son, he was a friend. Somebody who put his own needs before his own, he will forever live on in our memory.
Rest In Peace '
Meghan bites her lip, trying not to cry. I do manage to see a tear slip, she wipes it away as fast as it falls but it is still visible. She looks back at us and we all pretend to be looking away. She turns back around and places a note, written on a yellow piece of notebook paper, on top of the dirt. She whispers something, touches the grave lightly and turns back around.
"We can go now." She says, almost happy, I can tell she is faking it though. I look back at the grave and notice something, I whisper it to Toby.
"Hey Meg look next to the grave." Toby says. Meghan gives him a confused look but looks next the grave anyway. She almost breaks down when she reads the first sentence.
'Here lies the body of Maria Bella Sorenson Jacobs'
"My mom...." She whispers, her voice trailing off. Meghan looks down at the necklace she is wearing, it is a beautiful purple stone. She takes it off and places it on the grave.
"Dios los bendiga." Meghan whispers to the grave. I'm not sure what she said, because I don't speak Spanish, but I'm sure it was something heartfelt.
"What did she say?" Toby whispers to Walter. Walter shakes is head and shrugs. We wait there for about another 5-10 minutes then Sly speaks up.
"Ready to go?" He asks. Meghan nods Once we are settled in the car Toby asks.
"What did you say back there?"
"I said 'God bless you' in Spanish." Meghan replies.
"How are you guys geniuses and you can't understand basic Spanish?" Meghan asks.
"We just thought there were more important things to do." Walt replies.
"But what about you Toby, it would have gotten you even farther in your phycology career if you could have said you were bilingual. You could have helped a lot more patients." Meghan says smiling.
"Never got around to it." Toby responds smirking.
"Your bilingual?" Walter asks.
"Yeah, Spanish was my first langue that I learned in Puerto Rico. Then my father taught me English when I was four, the same year we moved to New Jersey." Meghan replies brushing her hands through her messy curls. Something about this conversation amuses me, but I can't tell what. I think it's that Meghan is finally opening up to us about her past. Finally we arrive at the hospital, when we get there we go straight to her room where the nurse hook her back up to all her medication and wires. It's about 4pm now so Shawn should be out of school soon. We here a knock at the door and Meg shouts 'come in'. Shawn walks in, but he doesn't look happy.
"Happy Memorial Day, my love." He says kissing Meghan on the head.
"Hi baby, what's wrong?" She asks concerned.
"What makes you believe something is wrong?"
"Your going to lie to a behaviorist?"
"Ok so there kind is something I need to tell you..." Shawn says, his voice trailing off.
"And what would that be?" Meghan asks her smile slowly fading into a look of fear. He hands her a neatly folded piece of paper and she slowly unfolds it. I can't ready what it says from here but by her expression, it doesn't seem good.
"You were accepted into the navy?" Meghan asks her voice weak and her face pale. Shawn nods.
"I didn't even know you wanted to be apart of the Navy?" Meghan says, with tears in her eyes.
"I didn't want to tell you because if I didn't get accepted because of my age or whatever, I didn't want to disappoint you." Shawn responds.
"You really want to do this?"
"Yes."
"Then I will support you." Meghan says, giving him a small smile. They hug for a long time and I swear I hear Meg crying, but I'm not sure.
"When do you leave?"
"Next week."
"Next week?!"
"Yeah."
"Well then I guess we'll have to make these next seven days memorable." Meghan says, she pulls his shirt closer to her and they kiss. I guess this wasn't such a horrible Memorial Day after all.
