Piya was very sure of completing this homework on time, in fact before time, as it was about writing about her favorite family. Her English teacher was teaching them about family structures, about joint family, nuclear family, different relations etc. and had asked all the students in her class to write about whichever was their favorite family and all the relations in it. They were free to choose their own family or any of their friends' or relatives'.
And Piya was already sure that she would write about her own family that was her favorite.
However, when she told her mamma- Payal about it during their study-time, Payal challenged her by asking was she absolutely sure writing it by only discussing with her or could she make it even more perfect? She also provided a hint to Piya saying that she could go and observe or talk to each of their family member and then add about them in her write up. Payal knew her daughter had a knack of doing things artistically and observing even minute things, thus she was always trying to help her daughter hone her skills at every chance they got.
And totally liking her mamma's idea, piya started making a list of all the family members she wanted interview: her mummy-papa of course, palash was too little but she was going to write a small paragraph on her baby brother who these days had started drawing random patterns on her all notebooks(!), then her Khushi maasi, Arnav chachu, chiku, rama dadi and dadaji, choti dadi (naniji), and her naughty sister Aru along with her sweetest kiddo-sister Pari!
Done with her list, she ideally should have started her work. But she was feeling as if she had missed someone. Who was she missing?
Just then HP kaka came there with a glass of badam-milk for her as he would often do whenever she and chiku were studying. She took the glass from him and as he was leaving from there, she suddenly remembered whom she was missing! Her loving kakas - HP, OP, JP and their equally loving wives, Janaki kaki and others! And as if one last but definitely not least important person person/animal friend of her family ensured he was not forgotten, Teddy came there and jumped on her lap! She caressed his head smilingly with her one hand as she wrote his name with the other and completed her list, to then begin with her write up!
.
.
Writing about her mamma-papa was easy. They were so much like her. Or maybe she was so much like them, as her dadi often said. Piya wrote the same, adding a special note that her Papa was a bathroom singer which was a secret only she and her mamma knew, even the thought made her giggle. But they both thought he was not such a bad singer, and she would like to learn to sing herself one day.
She then went to her Dadi's room. Her Rama dadi was talking -or rather having a playful banter- with the eldest member of their house, choti dadi (Naniji). Choti dadi was asking her rama dadi about making sweets at home for the upcoming diwali festival while her rama dadi was being lazy and saying they will order it from outside, from Khushi maasi's Gupta foods, if her maasi and mamma didn't get time to make it at home. It was then that Piya intervened,
"But rama dadi, I like those yellow laddus that you make. Aap sach mein nahi banaoge (Are you really not making them)?" Piya asked with a frown and her dadi immediately changed her stance.
