Her mother was already at the house. She had been anticipating this. Adeline was sure of it. She needed alcohol. She needed something to drown out this unfortunate turn of events.

The loom of Darrien's car behind her was threatening. He didn't even consider her feelings and thoughts when it came to proposing. Well hell he didn't even propose. He flat out told her this is what came next.

Her heart was pounding in her chest. She had a bad feeling. A really bad one. "Ms Jones are you alright?" Her driver asked as he held the door for her. Adeline nodded and got out.

Every step she took felt like she was walking toward her death bed. By the time she reached her door she hesitated. But Darrien clanked behind her and opened it for her.

It was unlocked.

Her mother was readily waiting for her.

Darrien tried to put an arm around her waist but Adeline stormed forward avoiding him and getting further inside the house.

Her mother was sitting on the sofa with her back to Adeline and she had a glass of wine in her hand. Amelie looked extremely put together, too put together if you would. She had a brief case and her purse beside her.

Adeline paused and took a breath before standing to her right. She opened her mouth but Amelie beat her to it.

"Sit down. Now."

Adeline bit the inside of her cheek and sat down. She looked at her mother across from her. Amelie sighed and took an extra sip.

"Adeline Carter Jones. My prodigy. My offspring." She humorlessly laughed.

Adeline took in a shaky breath. She knew the next words were not going to be good or supportive. Amelie had something on her. And there is only one thing that could make her this pissed.

"You know when I got pregnant I was devastated. I had a future. A good one. But your father convinced me something beautiful would come out of our life together." Amelie looked bitterly at her daughter.

"And you know I had beautiful daughter. Who I assumed would do great things and be a great influential woman in the future but no. I got an irresponsible, reckless, daughter who doesn't think about anything before she acts anymore." Her voice cut deep in Adeline's chest. It felt like she was little girl again being scolded. Not walking straight, slouching, head hanging low. All the things she did that disappointed her mother.

"I don't understand what you're getting at." Adeline spoke calmly. Amelie laughed. "Don't be obtuse Adeline. You have a tendency to that. You father will feed you illusions but I won't. Hence why you haven't even realized we have been divorced for 2 years."

Adeline's breath hitched slightly. She didn't know they bothered to put on an act for her. She was grown they should've just separated and been done with it. "Mother what is the purpose of today. And did you tell Darrien to propose today?"

Amelie stood up and grabbed the brief case pulling a folder out. Her face hardened as she opened the folder and looked at the contents in it.

"Adeline are you stupid?" She asked causally. Adeline screwed her face up. How dare she?

"Excuse me?"

"Are you stupid? Willingly or is it in your DNA?" Amelie hissed. Adeline felt her face grow warm. "I'm...I'm not stupid." She didn't even know how to fight her back.
