The day after Christmas..."Unit one please respond to an impalement on the corner of Cornelia and Camellia street"
Luke and Elliot were stopped at a red light when the call came through. "Copy, is the patient stable?"
"The fire department is on scene and reported that the patient was alert, and breathing spontaneously"
"Noted, we're two and half minutes out"
Luke got off the radio and headed to the location of the call.
Upon arrival Luke saw the fire department using tools to try and free the patient, he saw a man around his age, stuck on a short iron fence, blood on his pants and on the sidewalk.
Him and Elliot left the truck with their stuff and walked over to the situation, "what happened?" Luke questioned and when the man heard his voice he turned his head.
The man in this situation was Ashton, someone Luke hadn't seen in years. Ashton had this pained expression on his face. "Ashton what happened?" Luke questioned getting close as possible putting his gear down.
"Some asshole driver jumped the curb and I jumped out of the way and now the back of my left is stuck on this fucking fence." Ashton shouted, gritting his teeth in pain, Luke looked down seeing that Ashton's upper thigh had been impailed by the iron, "try not to move, the injury is probably really really close to your artery we can't risk rupturing it" Luke explained, "Ashton you could die if this artery gets torn."
Ashton started hyperventilating and shaking probably due to fear, stress and shock. "Elliot get the rebreather mask on him. We gotta keep him as stable as possible."
"Ash, I'm gonna put cardiac leads on your chest we gotta keep track of your heart rate and rhythm." Luke peeled electrodes off the paper and pulled down Ashton's sweatshirt exposing his skin, placing three cardiac leads turning on the monitor. "Your heart rate is 111 we can't allow it to get too high" he explained now beginning to start an IV. Luke noticed the bleeding from the leg getting worse and how he started to shake more than a couple of minutes ago.
"Ash, your shaking has gotten worse, your body is starting to go into shock because of the pain and injury. I'm going to give you something so you can come down a bit, I'll give you some pain meds to make things bearable , we gotta get you off this fence and in the ambulance as soon as possible."
Ashton was shaking probably due to the frigid temperatures and because of the injuries "help me!" He begged hyperventilating through the mask. "I am, we are pushing the meds now. Once they take effect the Fire department are gonna use their equipment to cut you off and then me and Elliot will take you from there."
Likely drew up the first vial and pushed it into the IV, then drew up the second vial and pushed it into the IV. He proceeded to look down at the monitor. "Heart rate is 118 now. Any higher your tachycardia will turn into super ventricular tachycardia and that's not good."
The firefighters eyed Luke waiting for the hood to go sign. Luke continuously monitored Ashton.
"Ashton how are you doing?" Elliot asked standing in front of him "dizzy, cold" he confessed shaking a lot. "Deep breaths Ashton, deep breaths." Elliot repeated putting on his stethoscope placing it on Ashton's chest.
"Dad, he can't wait much longer" Elliot whispered, Luke gulped then looked at the firemen giving them the look then back at Ashton. "Okay Ashton, we can't wait anymore, the firefighters are gonna cut you out of this.. going to warn you it's going to be loud and the metal is probably gonna get hot. I'll take one of your arms and my son is gonna take the other. We have the stretcher all set up, are you ready?"
