Luke came in for his usual shift, getting greeted by his supervisor, Charlotte, along with an unfamiliar face.
That unfamiliar face had long blonde straight hair, hazel eyes, and was wearing traditional blue scrubs.
"Luke this is Hannah, she's a new hire for the ER. She's going to be shadowing you for a few weeks." Luke extended his hand to shake Hannah's, Hannah made a weird face and shook Luke's hand anyways.
Charlotte dismissed them and Luke started walking making Hannah follow him, she rolled her eyes and folded her arms. Luke went to the desk that had all the intake forms of all the patients waiting in the waiting area. There were currently eight patients in the waiting room waiting to be seen.
"First things first, in our ER, a lot of the times us nurses are the ones grabbing patient paper work and calling them in to triage. Some weeks were very limited on staff so we can be doing a lot of stuff on top of typical patient care."
Hannah made a fake over exaggerated yawn like she was already bored of Luke talking. "Here I'll show you what I mean" Luke explained, glancing down at the papers he was holding.
"Miss Ember Devonport please step into triage room two please" Luke announced smiling as the patient stood up grabbing her tote bag making her way toward Luke who pointed her into the direction she needed to go.
The patient walked into the room first followed by Luke and then Hannah. "I'm Luke and this is Hannah a new member of the team, do you mind if she shadows me today?" Ember nodded yes.
"Your paperwork says that you have a severe sore throat, can you describe that?"
Ember struggled to talk, she was very hoarse sounding. "It hurts to talk and to swallow" Luke noted her symptoms.
"When did this start?"
"Yesterday.. I think."
"Hmm okay, it might be a throat infection. We'll have to run some tests to see what's wrong, is that okay with you?"
"Yep"
Luke turned out and took a throat swab out of the drawer along with supplies to draw blood. "Hannah can you please obtain some vitals first?"
"Fine" she rolled her eyes, taking a pulse ox out of her pocket following Luke's orders.
Luke watched as Hannah obtained vitals writing them down onto Embers chart. Luke did the throat swab, while directing Hannah to do the blood draws having to help because Hannah kept poking the patient missing the veins.
Luke apolgized a bunch times, promising to get through this quick, hitting a vein on the fifth try. "I could've done that" Hannah mumbled underneath her breath, Luke giving her the look.
They excused themselves dropping the tests off to the lab, Luke ready for the next patient. He went back to the front desk grabbing another paper, he gave it to Hannah this time "here call this patient, tell them room three is free"
She grabbed the paper from Luke's grip, walking a bit away from him. She cleared her throat, "Dawn Seldon please follow me to room three" a youngish woman hurried up from her spot rushing to follow Hannah and Luke she kept looking behind her, she seemed very anxious. They got into a room two minutes later, Dawn didn't even give the nurses two seconds to collect themselves before blurting out her concern.
"My period has been going on for three weeks and I'm bleeding really heavily" dawn was visibly upset wanting to be taken seriously. Luke's eyes widened he was immediately concerned. "When you say really heavily what do you mean by that?"
"I'm bleeding through the thickest possible pads within a half hour" Dawn gulped hoping this didn't mean something really bad.
Dawn adjusted herself on the chair, when she moved slightly looking noticed blood on it, a droplet dripping off and onto the floor. "I'm going to page gynecology Hannah get Dawn hooked up to fluids please"
