Luke loved working on the psych floor, but when an opportunity came along to go work in labor and delivery he took it.

This would also be the first time that he would be working along side Sierra after such a long time. In this department Sierra was in her element. Luke was proud to see her thrive.

It started out as a slow shift, both Luke and Sierra sitting at the nurses station when a call came through from an OB/GYN office across town saying they were sending a patient of theirs over for an urgent problem. The staff was quick on the phone and it wasn't until the faxed over paperwork came through and that's when the department learned what kind of situation they would be dealing with.

Luke pulled him up from the chair "I guess I'll prep the room" he announced grabbing a copy of the paperwork going to one of the many empty rooms.

He turned on the light switch, he made sure the bedding was clean, he went into one of the locked drawers pulling out supplies to start an IV, he made sure the monitor worked, he pulled out a fresh pack of cardiac monitors, paged the on call doctor along with the bereavement team.

Luke went and grabbed other paper work, an ink pad, a little blanket, a little hat.

Soon enough, Sierra was poking her head through the doorway, "our patient has arrived, and here's a copy of the ultrasound photos that her doctor took, she is roughly thirty weeks and there was no detectable heartbeat, they were checking for forty minutes" she explained, showing her co worker the radiology report.

"Is the doctor coming yet? And who's available to give her an epidural?"

"Doctor is on their way, as for anesthesiology Lancer is tied up in a c section so it looks like you gotta do this one"

"Oh"

Luke went to a cabinet this time pulling out epidural supplies for this particular patient, it would be the first time he'd be doing one without having someone overseeing what he does it was a bit of a nerve wracking thing.

Soon enough the patient was wheeled into the room with her husband, Sierra tagging along behind them.

Luke introduced himself to them but they barely interacted which was understandable. They definitely looked like they had been crying a bit on the trip over here.

The patients husband helped his wife into the bed Sierra automatically getting a blood pressure reading and started placing cardiac leads on her chest. Luke on the other hand grabbed the IV supplies and tried to find an access point as quick as possible basically having no luck having to stick one on the top of her left hand and Luke apologized about it being uncomfortable.

He started her on fluids and on medications to induce active labor.

He stepped out for a few minutes going into a supply closet across the hall, he grabbed a scrub cap and tied it securely behind his head, he put a long gown over his scrubs managing to tie the back part of it himself.

He went over to the sink and scrubbed his hands drying off slipping on long gloves. He walked across the hall with his hands up in front of him being sure not to touch anything to contaminate his sterile field.

When he got to the room he tapped on it with his foot letting Sierra know that she needed to open the door for him.

He walked in making way toward his supply table and the patient.

"How are you doing Mrs Spencer? Are the contractions kicking in yet?" He asked politely trying to not seem insensitive.

Mrs Spencer just stared blankly in front of her, as her husband held her hand tightly.
