The 8th years followed McGonagall down into the dungeons to their new dormitories. The excitement of the day began wearing away and most of the students wanted to find out their new roommates and get settled into their rooms. There was talk about who would bunk with who and what the common room would look like. The Slytherins knew the dungeons and hoped that it would look just like the one they grew up in. There was a large portrait of the founding member of Hogwarts hanging as their entry way.

"Password?" Godric Gryffindor asked.

"Merlin's shaggy beard." McGonagall said and the picture swung open as she stepped inside. "Watch your step."

The common room was huge. It was bright and cheery. The stone walls shined, there was a stone fireplace large enough for the entire Weasley family to step through, there were couches, bean bags, chaise lounges, and comfy chairs scattered around the room, there were tables and chairs for them to work on their studies, alcoves made up of bookshelves with large pillow. Everything set in browns and creams, except the cushions. Each bean bag was either blue, green, red or yellow. The couches also had the colored seat cushions but never two of the same colors together.

"It's a bit garish." Parvati said as she quickly covered her mouth with her hands.

McGonagall just laughed, "Now would be a nice time to remind all of you of the truth ward over your common room. Each bedroom has a name plaque of the students sharing it. Boys to the right and girls to the left." They could all see the staircases leading off the common rooms.

"Mr. Cornfoot" McGonagall said, as the Ravenclaw boy stepped forward, "Here is a list of all the roommates, if anyone would rather look before wandering up to their rooms. Tomorrow all of you will begin your assessment with the new mind healer. Monday, classes will begin. It is truly wonderful having so many of you return to us this year." With that McGonagall left the 8th years to settle in.

"Stephen, Steve, good buddy, who do I have as my roommate?" Zacharias Smith asked, as many of the others started to crowd around him.

"Stop!" Cornfoot stammered, "I'm just going to read this off, so everyone take two steps back."

As Stephen looks over the paper he starts to smile, "Thank goodness, it looks like most of us are with our own houses." As he looks up, he realizes all the girls have left, "Guess I took too long."

"Get on with it, mate." Michael Corner complains.

"Alphabetical is fair, Gryffindors first, Finnigan with Potter, Thomas with Weasley, and Longbottom with, oh um Hufflepuff Macmillan; Hufflepuff Finch-Fletchley and Smith; Ravenclaws Goldstein with Corner, Me and Boot; Slytherin, Goyle with Zabini and Malfoy with Nott."

Harry and Ron wait until the rush of boys heading to the rooms die down and decide to sit near the fire instead. Harry grabs a seat with a red cushion and Ron sits next to him on a green cushion.

"Ouch! Bloody hell." Ron jumps up from his cushion."

"What's wrong?"

"Just got a bad shock, what are they playing at with this."

"It looks like only someone from Slytherin can sit on the green cushions." Hermoine answers as she strolls up next to them. "I'm sharing with Parvati this year, are you two sharing or did you get separated?"

"That's mental, why would they arrange cushions so you can't talk to you best mates?" Ron looked around the room noticing that there were no two colors the same next to each other. "I'm with Dean and Harry has Seamus."

Ron pulls a red bean bag over by the fire and plops down.

"Ernie. Come here, I want to try something." Harry yells across the common room as he sees Ernie come down the stairs. Harry stands up and motions for Hermoine to take his seat.
