in a world where soulmates are connected through songs, hearing your soulmate sing only happens when you turn 18, but when kili turned 18 he heard nothing, he didn't hear anything for nearly six years before he heard a timid voice singing, he was smiling all day when he finally heard her

she was y/n, a timid dwarf that thorin recruits to help him reclaim erebor, the other dwarves had long since heard their soulmates, thorin even finding his in bilbo but y/n had never heard her soulmate sing, she'd sung but never go anything back

after a few months the dwarf conduct an experiment, having y/n and dwalin walk far enough away from the group that they weren't able to hear them, dwalin having found his soulmate in bofur,

once you've heard your soulmate sing you can then talk through your minds

third person pov

as the two walk into the woods y/n was singing to herself as she walks along a fallen tree "mountains and valleys and all that will come in between" she sings to herself making the gruff dwarf smile, they stop after a few minutes and dwalin sends the signal which was loosing one of gandalf's fireworks, it went up in a great crackle of blues, then back with the others they had fili sing first, he only sung a few lines from the song they used to torment bilbo, but nothing though thorin noticed ori's eyes widen slightly then they had ori who nervously sung but that's when fili jumps looking at him his mouth hanging open "i heard you in my head, like i heard you in person and in my head" fili shouts making the others laugh "well that settles one thing" balin says as the two sit together, they then have kili sing, he looks nervously at the others before nodding "i close my eyes and i can see, a world that's waiting up for me" he sings and he continues "that i call my own, through the dark through the door through where no ones been before, but it feels like home" he sings and y/n gasps stumbling over the log she was walking on in fright "i heard him dwalin" she says smiling, he smiles at her "they can say they can say it all sounds crazy, they can say they can say i've lost my mind but i don't care, i don't care so call me crazy" the voice she did not know was kili sung, she kept smiling as the two slowly walked back to camp "we can live in a world that we design, cause every night i lie in bed, the bright colours fill my head a million dreams are keeping me awake" he sings and this makes y/n stumble as the voice begins to sound familiar "i think of what the world could be a vision of the one i see a million dreams is all its gonna take, oh a million dreams for the world we're gonna make" he sings and she has to sit down, it was common for dizziness or light-headedness when soulmates sung so that's why dwalin was with y/n, he waited for her "there's a house we can build, every room inside is filled with things from far away, special things i've compile each one there to make you smile on a rainy day, they can say they can say it all sounds crazy, they can say they can say we've lost our minds" her soulmate sings and she leans against the tree beside her "i don't care, i don't care if they call us crazy run away to a world that we design, every night i smiling at y/n "a million dreams are keeping me awake" she sings back as he holds her steady, he too felt lightheaded but didn't want her to fall "a million dreams, a million dreams" he sings leaning them before they stop and he once again leans his head on hers as they sing "for the world we're gonna make" after they stop the company erupts into cheers, but kili and y/n aren't paying them any mind as they stare at each other "it was you all those years ago" he says she smiles nodding "do i still make you nervous?" he asks she nods "i was worried when you didn't sing back, i waited years" she says messing with the front of his top "im here now" he says as she leans her head against his pushing against him "would you freak out if i kissed you?" he asks quietly she shakes her head kissing him, he kisses back happily lifting her by the thighs as she puts her arms over his shoulders, his light-headedness comes back as he holds her making him fall flat on his back with her on top of her, the sudden change in direction makes y/n dizzy "by durin i thought the light-headedness was supposed to go away when i found her" kili whines making thorin laugh "nope it lasts about a week so enjoy that my dear nephew since you so loved tormenting me when i was light headed" he says making kili whine "if your mean to me i'll tell ma" he grumbles as y/n laughs leaning her head into his chest "im gonna puke" she says darting behind a bush, kili not far behind her "holy aule, i've never seen that reaction before" oin says checking the two over "how long has it been since she first sang to you kili?" oin asks and kili shrugs "i was eighteen, im now seventy or so" he says making oin nod "its just a side affect of it taking so long, you'll be grand in a day or two" he says walking away, the two young dwarves lay on the floor side by side not looking at each other only holding hands as they tried to ride out the nausea 'this is horrible' he says in her head making her laugh 'you think' she replies he smirks 'we should be fine lass' he replies she looks up at him as fili and ori land on their backs on the ground a few feet away "you guys too?" y/n asks fili nods "its a pain in the ass" fili replies ori nods, "oh durin its both princes" oin says thorin just laughs, 

once the light-headedness is gone the princes are glaring at their uncle who was just as mean to them as they were to him when he found out bilbo was his soulmate, y/n and ori just chuckling watching them, the only thing that stops the glaring is when the girl starts to sing "blue as the wings of a heron in the night like the rising of the tides on the shores of isle skye" she sings stopping the boys glaring "they gleam evergreen, winds 'a whistling in the pines like a castle-crawling vine, like the grassy glen of lyon" hearing her sing put the company in a better mood "and rich as the mud after rain upon the ground, they're a whisky hue of brown, braided river running wild" she sings smiling to herself "i fell astray, but in you, i have found that i am ever bound to your hazel eyes" after she sung that the company knew it was about kili, a few of them playing instruments when she paused "deep as the sea where the ocean meets the shore, where i met them once before, on the emerald cliffs of moher" her voice was sweet and lifted even the grumpiest of dwarf's mood "bright as the light setting fire to the north, rising high beyond the morn, laying shadows on the floor" she sings before continuing "long is the day when the moon obscures the sun 'tis the darkness they become, till the dawn upon the fjord" she sings now smiling at kili "i fell astray, but i am bone and blood and i am bound by love to your hazel eyes" she sings and once again the company play their instruments, "i fell astray but in you i have found that i am ever bound to your hazel eyes" she sings before she's kissed by kili 'you sound like an angel' he says making her smile into the kiss, the company cheering and applauding her "alright my love i get it but your squishing me" she whines as kili lays on top of her, he laughs putting all of his weight on her, previously he's been holding himself up with an arm beside her head she whines feeling his full weight "kili durin" she shouts he laughs harder "what darling, am i squashing you" he teases she gives him a grumpy glare 'get off or your sleeping beside bombur' she grumbles into his head, he rolls off her and nods "good, i was being nice to you and you squashed me go bother your brother or something" she snaps walking over to bofur and dwalin the two smile at her as she sits beside them "you sing well lass" bofur says she shrugs "last time im singing for him, he hurt me" she mumbles dwalin looks furious after she says this "he did what!" he all but yells and not even bofur's comfort calms him down "he knocked me over and i landed on a stick my side hurts alot" she says lifting her top and they see the scrape running down her side "oh im gonna kill him" dwalin yells marching off, he'd grown protective of the lass, she was like a sister to him 'kili run or don't i don't care right now' she says to his mind, he bolts spotting dwalin marching towards him, this continues for hours before thorin eventually steps in and sends everyone to bed
