His auburn hair burns in the sun of the slowly setting ball of heat. I watch as he climbs in the main mast, his halflong hair blowing in the wind. I do not understand how he is not afraid to fall into the water. "Come on canopus, don't be afraid" He says with a smile as he looks down. I take a deep breath and take my first step on the strange ladder. "These are the shrouds, we climb these the most." evan says, I feel so much hesitation as I start climbing it. "Come on" He says as he almost jumps up the ladder. When a wave hits the galleon and I almost fall off the ladder. grabs my hand, his smile beams as he jokingly says. "Let's stay on deck till you have sea legs." evan says.
The twilight sets in and so does the drunken streak of the other sailors. Only evan does not drink, well he does drink but no mead or beer. They sing about fighting winds, dancing waves a loyal crew and an adventure to never forget. The music is produced by banging on the decks and clapping in their hands. Evan dances elegantly to the rough music and everyone cheers him on, his cute little freckles seem to spark. I like evan, he's such an adorable boy, he's younger than I am but he has sailed since he was four, this is my first time on sea, and I am eightteen. Not much later everybody is going to sleep.
Evan is sitting on the upper deck, I walk up to him. "Where are we going Evan?" "The skye chaser is never going anywhere in particular, well when we're not returning." "Where are we going than?" I ask again. He smiles and climbs into the shrouds and leans out, so he seems to float with the salty wind through his hair and the stars in his eyes. "Adventure!" He says with a proud smile as he slowly closes his eyes, I close my eyes too and notice how good the sea smells. "How do you live like this? On the edge of danger all the time? Of uncertainty? How do you not worry?" He sighs and steps back onto the deck. "Well, we have someone who worries enough for everybody." He says as he points to the sailor who's more dressed up than all the others. "Who is that?" "Ask him yourself" Evan says while walking away. Leaving me with too much curiosity to call this a consious choice.
I walk up to the person. His hair is long and white, his skin is even whiter and the first thing I notice is his slightly pointy ears. "Canopus right?" He says while looking through his nautical telescope. "Yes that's my names sir." I say. "Never sailed before is that right?" He says with his calm, quiet voice. He puts the telescope down but doesn't turn to see me. "You seem like a bright young man, do you know which star is yours?" I shake my head. He points one out, "That's you." He gives me the telescope and helps me see it. "Beautiful isn't it?" He says with a modest smile. "Who are you sir?" I ask, "Oh, my bad," he says, still focusing on the stars in front of us. "I am Wynn, the captain and owner of this ship." I nod I look at him, now the dark blue beautifully detailed suit makes sense, there are little stars embroidered into in a beautiful way, it's really subtle. "That is polaris, the north star, so that's the north." Wynn says. I nod, "Stars are ways to guide us." He takes a deep breath, "I miss them" He whispers under his breath. But I pretend not to hear it.
"Captain, where are we going?" he asks, wynn smirks. "Wouldn't you like to know my dear ginger friend. That should be your crew name: ginger beer." He says with a chuckle. I laugh as I look at my long ginger hair contrasting my tanned skin and green clothes. "But seriously captain. Where?" He turns to me, one of his eyes is purple and the other has a scar right through it as is fluorescent green. "Where the sea and stars lead us, where faith wants us to be. Where we've never been, or where we've been too many times." He says with a smile. "Why?" He shrugs, "We are humans not fit for one place, the sea is our home. We learn so much about it. The sea sings the songs of my soul, it dances on the beats of my emotions. It is a living thing, it is something adventurous, it is something unpreditable. We will never have habits here, life doesn't get boring." "How can you continue living like this?" "Not everyone can" He says with a tear in his eye, "we've lost so many." He takes off his tricorne hat and puts it over his heart.
"Welcome to the sovereign seas, here we have no rules. We are as free as can be, this ship is the ultimate freedom for many of these boys. It has also been for me. I wasn't always the captain, this once belonged to someone much wiser than I am Canopus. But don't worry. I have the feeling you'll meet eventually." He says with a smile. "I have never seen so many stars." I say, quite confused as the stars seem to start moving. I'm confused as they begin to come towards the ship and the water begins to glow with a silver magical glow. Wynn's hair also seems to gleams as he is climbing the shrouds. The stars are so beautiful as the slowly come closer and closer. I suddenly see that the stars seem to be something like humans. Wynn reaches out to them, all of them smile at him and one even touches his face tenderly. Almost as if it's family, stars, I knew they were magical, but not this magical.
And than I wake up, I look around me. I'm still on the skye chaser but below deck in my hammock. "Evan," He looks up, "How long did I talk with the captain yesterday." "About a minute" He says while shrugging. I smile but I would like to frown. What happened yesterday?
"When will we tell him?" Evan asks Wynn. "He has too much wonder, not yet. He must first see the dangers" The devout captain says. "Any news on how to return?" Evan asks. "As empty as ever" Wynn says resting his head on his hands. "I miss them so Evan" "It is alright prince."
I just had a lot of fun here it is all over the place, very vague, but I quite like it actually
