The queen's decision

The queen stormed through the halls. The green dress whirling in the winds her furious and hurried steps produced. The way she carried herself with dignity even when in utter hopelessness was admirable, but also.....inhumane. It was hard to understand the queen, even for the ones close to her, she always seemed larger than life, untouchable. Even in times of grief, in times of humanity. "Where is he?" She says while she storms into the room. Opening the doors with the anger of a soldier after battle. "My queen, you cannot see him...." One of the measly quards tries to say but she throws the young boy against the wall with her raging sadness and walks into the beautiful room of her husband. The one she has promised to cherish till he breathes his last breath. I know I don't stand a chance against the last part of humanity she is holding onto.

Her furious red locks fall down beautifully as she sits down on her knees next to his beautiful bed. "My darling" She whispers. The pale king looked at her for a second and smiled before petting her beautiful curly cascading hair. "Do not meddle in magic my queen. That is the only advice I have to give you." His face was slowly using the colour. "You cannot go, you need to be here for your child. I still need you. I cannot be here without you. You promised Aonghus. You would be there for us." She whispers. "I am protecting you from them my lovely yew tree. I cannot bare to see your sadness, my beautiful strength." "What will his name be?" the dying king smile and puts his hand on the stomach of the beautiful woman. "If it is a girl, Eilidh, just like the most beautiful woman. Like you my love. Eoghan, born from the yew tree." She chuckles as she tries to fight the tears in her eyes. "You need to let her keep me. Do not try to save my body. She will curse you." he says. He kisses her hand and she weeps silently as he slips away. The sound of the sea is the only sound in the four walls of the beautiful palace room. Eilidh puts her head on the chest of her beloved husband and closes her eyes. Trying to ignore the beautiful song she starts to hear. The queen composes herself and takes a step back.

"Welcome back Lyris." She says as she stares at the woman she hates most as the beautiful creature appears out of thin air. The beautiful white hair of the chladaich that has tortured the kingdom. Well, she did torture the kingdom but she isn't the one who chose to. No one really knows her master. "I am not welcome here, we both know that my dear Eilidh." The queen puts her hand on her stomach. "You are going to be an aunt." "I am no longer her." Lyris hisses and the queen nods. "So you've come here to rob me of the last thing I have left of him." The beautiful creature smiles and walks up to the bed, the beautiful gown is made of water and her delicate white feet are bare. Her white hair obscures the king's face as she kisses his forehead and he slowly becomes water. She smiles and screams before disappearing and leaving the fiery queen alone with her grief. So alone.

Eilidh

The night is dark as I am in excruciating pain. I push another human into this world with my godgiven right of a child. A child of the man I have loved, the last hope I still have. I need a little girl to keep me alive and keep me courageous. I need hope I can see, hope I can touch. I cannot cry, not because of the pain of this blessing or the pain of losing my husband. I am courageous, I am not the little frightened girl I once was. I am the leader of the country I am the lover of the world. I squeeze the hand of the midwife and scream in absolute anger. I look to the miracle that is a child as my ears are overwhelmed by the crying of my hope. The beautiful child in given to me. "It is a boy." The midwife says with a smile. I chuckle and hold his beautiful small hand and he wraps his hand around my finger and he opens his eyes. One of his eyes is dark blue and the other is as green as mine are, but that dark blue, that is the same eye as his father had. "Hello Eoghan, I missed you before I knew you would arrive." I whisper as the tears fall and he grabs hold of my curly red hair. One of the younger guards looks at the baby.

"Our king is born." I look up. My heart feels fear as I remember the promise I made to myself. He is a son,  he is my son. But more importantly, he is the king's son...... He will be the one standing above me. He will be child ruler.....I look at the innocent child. I stand up and lay him in his crib as I walk towards the window. "All of you, go away, get Adair." I say while hiding my tears and deciding to be a benevolent ruler, a good queen but a bad person and even worse: the worst mother. I look at the baby as he sleeps peacefully and curse myself. If I would not have a country to care for I could not do this. But children become tyrants, tyrants become war, war becomes death. I have had enough death.

Adair

"Yes your majesty?" "Your wife has given birth tonight too right?" I nod and close the door. My strawberry blonde hair is untidy and my armour was put on in a haste. I walk up to the beatifully decorated crib. "One of your twins has died correct?" "Yes, I do not see how that is revelant..." She cuts me off. He fiery red hair is glowing like a beautiful flame in the light of the fire. She stares into the flames. "Two babies must die tonight. I need evidence he died, may I use your child?" I look at her. "But he is perfectly happy." "Yes or no Adair, I know you are the only one I can trust with this." "Yes majesty, you can use the corpse." She nods "Adair. Take the baby, kill him." She has tears in her eyes, she is already mourning this baby, why does she ask me to kill him. "Why...." "Do not ask me question, I cannot doubt this decision!" She says while turning around. "Please, kill him." She says. "Do you want to say goodbye." She looks at the baby. "No." I grab the baby and walk away. "Wait!" She walks up to him and gives him the precious necklace, she once got from the king. "I am so sorry my little Eoghan."

I arrive at the woods and dismount my horse. I put the baby down and lift my sword. The baby opens his eyes and I am mesmerised by his eyes. The eyes stare at me as if he understands what's happening. I recognise the little guy I have just seen struggling for his life. He looks like my own son, he has done nothing wrong. How could I ever kill him? I cannot kill this little human. Or at least not murder him with my bare hands. I cannot kill him but I could leave him somewhere I know he will die. I walk towards the shoreline. The sand of the beach is damp and the tide is coming in. I put the baby down and tuck the necklace in his small shirt. I take a deep breath and walk away as fast I can. Away from my consience.

The tide comes in, the little baby simply admires the stars. Oblivious to his doom. The water slowly start to swirls elegantly. The sea produces a beautiful melody. The moon shines on it as a head forms from the water, the intense blue eyes glow, they actually produce light. The beautiful white hands touch the adorable face and the creatures swirls around the little human. The creature is clad in clothes that look like they're spun from the moonlight and his hair is a beautiful dark blue with silver glow. "Hello litte guy." He says with a sinister smile bearing his teeth that appear sharp in the right lighting. "My name is narcissus. I am leader of the chladaich, feared mythical creatures, and you will be my son." The creature says with a surprisingly kind smile. He notices the necklace. He chuckles, and studies the babies eyes. "Lucky me. Welcome to my world. You shall be called Arid" He says as he lifts the baby up to the moon while looking it in the eyes like a real father would do. This creature seems happy as he rocks the baby and sings a lullaby. The creature slowly disappears into nothingness as he walks along the coast.

My name is Arid. I am the child of the most hated man in the kingdom. And I am proud to be his son.
