"What are you doing?" I frown as I've spent the last couple of minutes watching Chris apparently make me a drink - although the Brit in me is crying at just how he makes tea.
"Making you tea? Why?" He frowns at this.
I glance to the microwave. "Bubba, that's really not how you're meant to make tea".
"Ok then, you show me the British way and I'll tell you if it's better or not". He now crosses his arms and leans back against the kitchen counter with some amusement on his features. Muscles bulging from the top he's wearing.
I get up, "ok where's your tea bags? And please don't say you have that Lipton stuff because that's not tea at all".
He laughs and produces the box of tea bags that he got from shop yesterday.
I get the kettle and fill it with water, boiling it and then popping the teabag into the mug with some sugar. "Milk in last, otherwise it's just diabolical". I state as I fill the mug with water and then add the milk in last. "Although that one's still up for debate where I'm from".
Chris just keeps smiling at me, watching me instead of my tea making lesson. I take the bag out after a while when the colour is just right in my opinion and then push it to him.
"And there you have it - tea, Harper's version". I say proudly, realising he's still only has eyes for me and not the beverage.
"Harper's version is the only version I want". He leans in and gives me a kiss, then taking a sip of the tea. "Ok yeah, you're gonna have to show me again how to do this because I really wasn't paying attention - I had a nice distraction though".
I kiss him again. "No more microwave tea". Now scolding him lightly and then making another cup for myself.
The doorbell rings and he goes to answer. Conversation is muffled from where I am but I know it's a female voice. Before I know it, a woman is now walking into the kitchen - stopping and doing a double take as she sees me, Chris is quickly following her but sighs as he realises she's seen me. "Now I know the reason why I haven't been able to contact you for the last couple of days". Her face looks amused.
He looks a little guilty. "Sorry Ma - this is Harper, Harper, this is my mom - Lisa".
"The dancer that Scott told me about?" Lisa turns to him as he nods and then comes over to me with a smile. "It's nice to meet you Harper". She says and gives me a hug. "I can see why my son's been distracted".
I smirk at Chris. "You seriously been ghosting your mum?".
"Believe me it wasn't intentional - was kinda caught up in you and forgot to call her back yesterday".
Damn right he was.
"So..." Lisa takes a seat at the kitchen counter. "How long have you two been...well, are you together?"
"We've, er, been talking for a few months - Harper's been on tour so it's been a little hard to meet in person. But we've decided to give things a shot".
Lisa nods. "I see, well it's lovely to finally meet you", she says again to me. "How long are you here for?"
"Only this week - although I think Chris would prefer me to stay longer". I laugh nervously, wondering whether she's secretly annoyed at him for not telling her about me, or whether she likes me in general. If she doesn't then I don't know how I'll feel about that.
"If I had my way you'd be staying for the whole time you're off". He grins and offers Lisa some coffee, which she gratefully accepts.
She now looks at me. "Will you be coming back again during your time off? It'd be nice for the rest of the family to meet you".
Oh shit, I'm really not ready for that yet.
Chris thankfully senses my internal panic and shakes his head. "Give it some time Mom, She's only been here a few days".
"I'm just a little excited that's all - it's been a while since you really brought anyone home and-"
"Anyway!" He cuts her off with a small chuckle, "Harper's actually on tour for Taylor Swift, did Scott tell you that?"
Lisa eyes him knowingly. "I know all about that - he wouldn't shut up after you came home that night, he still needs to take the friendship bracelets that he left in his old room, home". She rolls her eyes.
I turn to Chris. "Waaaaaait, you guys made friendship bracelets? That's cute!"
"Technically he did - I didn't". He says, "But he made me wear a couple - anyway I was there to watch a pretty girl dance while I listened to some good music".
"Yeah, Taylor can really move". I smirk knowing that he meant me.
He slips his arm around me and then mutters into my ear, "so can you - both on and off stage..." I almost choke on my tea, thankfully Lisa chose to turn a blind eye and instead is texting someone. "You staying for lunch, Ma?" Chris asks.
Lisa looks to us both. "Oh...well I don't wanna gatecrash your time together, I only came over to check if you were ok. I get worried about you being here alone, but I guess I don't think I need to as much anymore".
"Stay". I say, "I don't mind - it'd be nice to get to know you too".
"Likewise, how long were you planning on hiding Harper from me?" She laughs lightly as Chris gets some things out to make for lunch.
"Not long, honestly - I just wanted to kinda make things official before I introduced her to anyone".
Lisa nods. "Well Scott's birthday is coming up, you're more than welcome to join us for that. We're gonna be going out to dinner, I'm sure he'd love it if you came".
"I know I would". I hear Chris say under his breath. Thankfully his mum doesn't.
I take a sip of my tea that's going cold. Typical. "Perhaps speak to him first, but if he wants me to then just let me know the time and place, and I'll be there".
Out of the corner of my eye, I can see Chris smiling to himself. At least I may have an ally in Mama Evans - and that's a very good sign indeed.
