It was the night of the ball. I was dressed and was waiting for Prince Gabriel to finish speaking with his guard. He was most likely instructing him how he will keep me busy while he was with Princess Cadence.
The thought that he was going to be with her for the first part of the ball made me feel ill in the stomach and I didn't like that one bit.
Prince Gabriel nodded towards me and then came over.
"I'm sorry. I will be quick and I'll be with you soon. My guard will escort you in and he will show you around and also ask for dance partners for you." He held my hand. "I'll be back."
I nodded at everything he said. "Okay. Where would you be?" I asked.
"I will be in the room across this ballroom. See that door there," he pointed to a door just across from the entrance to the ballroom. "I'll be right there."
"How long would you be in there?" I asked. I know it was dumb question but I just couldn't wrap my mind that he would be gone for the first part.
"Two hours at most," Prince Gabriel said.
"Why couldn't you two talk tomorrow?" I asked.
"It must happen tonight. We're leaving tomorrow."
"We've only been here one day and two nights," I said. "What's the rush?"
He raised his eyebrows. "You've been counting?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I don't want to be here anymore," I said. I don't belong here, can't you see?
He frowned in confusion. "Why would you say that?"
"Gabriel!" I rolled my eyes. It was Princess Cadence calling. She rushed to Prince Gabriel's side, taking his arm.
"Can we go?" She asked, sweetly. Her pale hair was in a twist and any color she wore stood out. Tonight she wore red. She was like a strawberry in white frosting.
"I'll be with you soon," he said. He stepped forward but then decided against it and left with Princess Cadence who was smiling smugly. I didn't trust her.
The guard came to my side. "Come, Miss Ezra."
I stared at him. He had a strongly look about him and he was tall, making me feel very tiny. Should I give my arm to him or...? Instead I nodded and walked forward, with him behind.
As we walked into the ballroom, I really felt like I was at the Gathering House at home. I closed my eyes, and I truly felt like I was back home. The laughter, the music, and the food all mixed together brought back nostalgic memories. I opened my eyes. It wasn't the Gathering House but a royal ball with people who looked down on their poorest of their subjects.
"Miss Ezra, follow me," the guard said. He walked in front of me, leading me to a table full of princesses.
I tried to hide my reaction. The last time I saw these princesses was at Endhart's ball and if I remember correctly, they didn't like me one bit.
"Your Highnesses, Miss Ezra will join you, please welcome her," the guard announced. I wanted to hide behind a curtain. The look on the princesses' face was a crack on the mirror on their beautiful faces.
The guard pulled out a seat and gestured me to sit down. I did. I looked for the guard.
"Why am I with them?" I whispered.
"His Highness requested I sat you down with the princesses," he whispered back.
"But they don't like me!" I whispered.
