That night I heard countless of footsteps outside my door. I was on the floor, eating my dinner, staring at my fireplace when I started to hear loud laughter. I finished up my dinner so I could stand and walk around my room. I stood up and picked up my dish and an emptied glass. I set them down at the tray on a cart that my maid brought in.
I supposed I should ring a bell that was connected at the wall behind my bed, to call my maids and help me out of this disturbing gown and into my nightgown.
Though before I could ring the bell, there was a knock at my door. I checked if I was presentable and my heart leaped. There was a stain on my gown at my waist, probably from the soup. I just hoped that whoever was at my door is one of my maids.
I opened the door. Well wishes don't come true for peasants like me.
Queen Keira was at my door. I crossed my arms and covered the stain.
"Your Majesty, what do you need?" I asked.
"I'm here just to give you a warning." The Queen's eyes turned dark. "If I catch you looking at any of the princes here I will see to it that your family's connection with us would be cut. You hear me, Ezra?"
My eyes went wide. Did she just threatened to destroy my family's life work? I was already shaking my head.
The Queen smiled. "Promise me, Ezra. My son needs a bride and you're my last hope. Don't look at any princes that has arrived."
"I promise." I would not hurt my family.
"Good. Now have a good sleep. Oh and please call your maids to get that cart out."
"Your Majesty, if I may ask... Um can I ask you something?" I just needed to know, it has been running around my mind ever since I was taken.
"Well make it quick." The Queen sounded annoyed as if her time was more precious than mine, a peasant.
"Do you seriously think I could be a princess and a queen someday? Why me? I don't understand." I had to know.
The Queen laughed. None too nicely. "So you're actually clever. I thought you had no brains at all."
I frowned. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"You're my son's punishment. He deserves to have you."
"Am I just so awful to be given to your son?" I asked, unfolding my arms, not caring if she sees the stain.
"His children will have tainted blood if he loves you. That is his punishment, he will be fault of the start of the dirtiness of our bloodline. He could have had the advantage of marrying a princess but he rejected that future that will keep our pure royal bloodline going. You the one that can help with the dirty blood." She laughed again. "Though he can still save our bloodline when he rejects you."
I couldn't help it but tears sprung in my eyes. I would not let them fall. "So I am taken away from my family for nothing." It wasn't a question.
"You're a useless effort."
I gasped. That hurt me so much than being called dirty blood. My effort meant everything to me.
"So you don't think I could win his heart?" I asked.
"No." She seem unfazed by the tears that threatened to fall. I quickly wiped them away. "When it's over with you, he would see what he was missing. He would finally appreciate the luxury of the lines of princesses that would love to become his bride."
I nodded, taking everything in. "Thank you for answering my question."
"Don't tell him or there would be consequences," Queen Keira said.
