"Do you not get that from anyone else?" He said with a soft but curious tone in his voice, he wanted to know if I hadn't received any affection from anyone else besides him.
"The workers are here to do their work, I think they pretend to care but don't," I replied.
He sighed as he heard my response. He had a feeling that they were just putting on a facade with their kindness as well because they were supposed to be doing their jobs. But my response just confirmed things for him.
"And the other patients?" He asked, he was curious to know if I had anyone else who would show me kindness besides the workers or did I just came to him as my only option.
"I don't like associating with them," I said gently.
He stayed silent for a bit as he considered my answer, I made it clear that I preferred to distance myself from the other patients. He wondered if that meant I felt uncomfortable around them or if I just didn't feel like being around them due to some other reasons.
"Is there a reason why you don't like associating with them? Have they done something to upset you?" He asked calmly and politely as he awaited my response.
"I don't like when they scream or shout, it scares me," I continued to pick out my nails.
He nods as he realizes why that would be scary for me, I've gone through a lot in my life which has made me rather sensitive. So someone screaming or shouting would frighten me due to what I've been through in the past.
"So you just want to stay away from them for your own safety?" He asked gently and calmly.
I nodded.
"I understand..." He replied softly as he let out another sigh.
"And do you feel safe here? Like with me around?" He was genuinely asking the question out of his curiosity and concern for me, he hopes that I feel that I have his support and companionship around me since he's the only person who's genuine with me and actually likes being around me.
I nodded fast.
He saw me nod quickly and he let out a small smile as he spoke.
"I'm glad that I could give you comfort," He spoke softly and gently, he had a kind look on his face as he said this as well. He was starting to feel happy about that because he knew that it was something I truly needed since it seemed that I hadn't received any proper kindness and compassion from people up until now.
"Could you read a book to me again?" I looked at him with gentle eyes.
He noticed me gently looking at him with my kind eyes and it warmed his heart, it felt nice to know that he had a positive impact on me. So he smiled softly and calmly as he agreed to do what I asked.
"Of course, I can do that for you," He said in a soft but gentle tone of voice. He liked hearing me make such a simple but meaningful request as it made him realize how much he meant to me.
I got excited as I got into the covers of my bed and waited.
He smiled kindly as I waited, it was rather adorable to see me get so excited over something so simple. He couldn't help but feel happy about this, so he took the book with him and sat down on the edge of my bed. He remained silent for a moment as he glanced at the book and he tried to figure out where he left off the last time he had read it to me.
He finally found the page that he was looking for as his voice began to read the story again. His soft and gentle voice filled the room as he slowly got back into the task of reading the book to me. He tried to read with more excitement and enthusiasm than the last time so he could ensure that I was engaged and entertained by it.
He continued to read for a while as he spoke in a gentle yet enthusiastic manner, keeping his soft yet engaging tone of voice as he read the words within the book and brought the story to life. He remained seated on the edge of the bed as he kept reading the story and he didn't want to stop so my focus could remain on the story being told to me. He was just hoping that he could distract me from everything that was bothering me.
He could tell that the calmness of his voice was soothing me, it felt like I was slowly starting to fall asleep. His expression remained gentle and soft as he kept speaking in a gentle and calm tone of voice, he was happy to have that impact on me.
It was almost as if he was comforting me to sleep, I felt safe around him. And the way he was reading the book to me was calming me down and relaxing me, it was almost as if he was a parent who was reading a bedtime story to his child.
He saw me slowly resting on the bed and closing my eyes as he spoke, he knew that I was starting to drift off. It made him slightly happy to know that he provided something useful for me, he felt a sense of pride as he was helping me fall asleep. And there was a small smile on his face as he spoke, his voice was slightly quieter now since he was being gentle with me as I fell asleep.
I started to drift off into a restless slumber, I snuggled into the covers however my right hand was resting near his hand.
His eyes moved onto my hand as his gaze was suddenly drawn toward it. And he noticed that my hand, the right one was slightly resting near his. He also noticed how I started to snuggle more into the covers as if I was trying to get more comfortable while I drifted into slumber. He stayed silent for a moment, he was happy that I trusted him enough to be comfortable around him like this.
