A whole week had passed since my parents dropped their "solution" to my so-called behavioral issues.
I hadn't seen my father in days. Didn't care.
Mom was home but didn't even bother to check where I was.
Maybe they finally got it - I'm not a damn child.
The weather had been shit for weeks, but today was different.
Clear skies.
Tempting enough to stay out longer - not that I had plans. I usually didn't.
No reason to rush home to anything.
"And what're you doin' later? Alexander and I are hitting the strip club tonight. Wanna come?"
Ugh. Alexander.
I hated that prick.
Strip clubs? Meh. If I wanted, I could buy company. But I never really cared.
Even my first time didn't mean much.
Late bloomer. I was twenty.
"I dunno, man. Not feeling it. Got enough on my mind. Have fun though."
I said it neutrally, and Stephan left me alone.
My mind was a mess and still... empty.
I figured I'd go home, binge some show, pass out.
Yeah. Great plan.
"Already 5:26 PM."
Time flies when you're doing nothing.
I grabbed my bag. No Uber.
Maybe the walk would help clear the fog.
When I got home, the mansion was quiet.
No staff.
No Mom.
I called her name. No answer.
Whatever. I'm used to it.
No appetite.
Maybe some snacks for my room.
I walked into the kitchen... and there he was.
---
"Excuse me?"
I'd never seen him before.
Not one of Dad's colleagues.
Not a servant.
He was dressed casually - tall, creole, black hair, light skin.
"Hello??"
No response.
"Can I help you?"
Still nothing.
"HELLO??"
Alright. One more try, and I'm throwing hands.
"Are you deaf or something? Who are you? What are you doing in my house?"
Silence.
Just standing there. Staring.
"Yo! I asked you something! Who the fuck let you in?! My dad's not here - so deal with me!"
Still nothing.
I lost it.
"Alright, man. You asked for it."
I swung.
Fist connected with his face... and instantly I regretted it.
Pain.
Fucking pain.
He didn't move.
Didn't flinch.
Didn't block.
And still, my hand felt like it hit a wall.
"I hope you learned something,"
came a voice behind me.
My dad.
Smirking. Of course.
He shook his head like I was some toddler who just broke a lamp.
"Proves you're still a child.
Which is why we got you this."
This.
He said this.
"What the fuck?! Who is this guy?! I've been asking him, and he just stares like a statue!"
My dad frowned.
"You deserved that pain. And I warned you to watch your mouth!"
Still. No answers.
The guy stood there, emotionless.
Then Dad said:
"He won't react until he's turned on."
Excuse me, WHAT?
Dad tapped his smartwatch.
And the guy... came to life.
He cracked his neck. Looked around.
Like someone waking from a nap.
"Like I promised," Dad said.
"This is Miles. Your new assistant. He's a prototype.
Expensive as hell.
Break him - and you'll pay. Even for a scratch. Understood?"
I was speechless.
A robot?
How the fuck am I supposed to break him down emotionally if he doesn't even have emotions?!
My whole plan to ruin this assistant's life? Gone.
I can't afford repairs.
But hey, accidents happen.
"Okay, seriously. What the fuck is this? I'm not going anywhere with this thing! It's a robot and-"
"May I speak now?"
I froze.
He speaks.
And the voice? Smooth. Warm.
Human.
"Yes, you may," Dad said, smiling.
"Mr. O'Hara," Miles turned to me.
"Please listen to your father next time.
Vulgarity is such a bad habit.
We'll work on that first.
Forgive me - my name is Miles.
I'm a humanoid, not a robot.
I'm designed to assist individuals with behavioral or emotional instability and help them become better contributors to society."
I blinked.
"Is it... talking to me?! Dad! Take this trash out!"
"Language, please."
I'd had it.
I didn't come home for this sci-fi nightmare.
I need a plan. Fast.
Because this thing - this Miles - isn't going to be easy to scare off.
And I'm not about to be outplayed by a machine.
