Miles’ POV
Few months earlier
He’s been avoiding me lately. I don’t think I did anything to deserve that. In truth, I’ve been trying to protect him—from his own bad decisions, from his sadness, from the world. But no matter how much I try, I keep failing.
Will is like an abandoned child still begging silently for love. They say he’s a lost cause. But I don’t believe that. Not for a second.
He’s smart. Creative. Capable of so much good when he wants to be. He had started to open up, to show his softer side... but now he’s slipping again. Just like in the beginning. He’s harsh. Mean. Defeated. And I can’t let him drown in that darkness.
His father talks about sending him to the military, like that would fix anything. But it won’t. It’ll kill the small, fragile child inside him—the part of him that still dreams of being loved.
I’ve done all I could to be kind. Patient. But now, he’s drinking again. Skipping classes. And he says I hurt him.
I warned him. Passion—attraction toward someone like me—will only hurt him in the end. But he wouldn’t believe me.
He listens to no one. Not the staff. Not his parents. And sometimes, not even me.
He’s locked himself in the bathroom again. He’s probably drunk. He’s not answering. I’ve knocked. Spoken gently through the door. All I got back was cursing.
This is my fault. Maybe I was too soft. Too forgiving.
Still, I don’t want to give up on him the way others did. So I came up with a plan. A wild one. Maybe if I fix things between him and Lorette, maybe if they get back together, he can forget about me. And maybe—just maybe—he’ll heal.
I found her address. She lived just a few streets away. It was a nice walk. Or so I thought.
Their home was smaller, modest, but tidy. Dogs barked somewhere in the distance. I rang the bell, silently praying no one would see me.
A woman opened the door, dressed in what looked like a cross between a jumpsuit and gym clothes. Odd, but I wasn’t here to judge.
“Good evening, ma’am. I’m looking for someone named Lorette. I believe she’s your daughter.”
She laughed softly. “Aw, you’re cute. But aren’t you a little old for her?”
She hadn’t realized what I was. That was... comforting.
“I’m not her boyfriend, don’t worry. I’m here on behalf of her ex. Just want to fix a mistake between them.”
Surprisingly, she let me in. “Come on in. I’ll call her. Don’t worry about the dogs—they’re loud, but harmless.”
I waited. Looked around. And then Lorette appeared.
The anger in her eyes struck like lightning.
“You’ve got a lot of nerve showing up here, bastard!” she snapped. “I’m not talking to you or your little boyfriend!”
Her voice was sharp. I stayed calm.
“Miss, please. There’s been a misunderstanding. I’m not his lover. I’m not even human. He’s not—”
“Cut the shit!” she screamed. “Get the hell out before I let the dogs loose!”
I tried once more. “Just give me five minutes to explain—”
“I said LEAVE!”
“Just one minute. Please. He only wants—”
“Foxy! Razzle!”
The barking intensified. I had no choice. I stepped outside.
And then, a black BMW pulled up.
A man stepped out. Mid-20s, maybe 30. Sharp jawline. Cold stare. Probably her brother.
“I can talk to him,” I thought. Foolishly.
“Can I help you? Are you my dad’s friend?” he asked.
Friendly. At first.
“No, sir. My name is Miles. I’m employed by Mr. O’Hara. I serve his son as an assist—”
“You’re the son of a bitch.”
His entire expression changed. He stepped closer. Tension rising.
“I’ve seen your face,” he said. “I KNOW I’ve seen your face.”
“I’m not allowed outside usually. I came to fix things—”
He grabbed my collar.
“You dare show up here?!”
He began shaking me violently. My internal balance sensors panicked. I tried to warn him:
“Sir, I’m a humanoid. This could cause—”
“You already caused enough problems!” he roared.
Then came the blows. Fists. Then something harder—an iron rod, maybe.
I raised an arm in defense. It broke. Just like that.
Pain doesn’t register in me. But damage does. And I was registering a lot of it.
“Piece of shit robot!”
My vision blinked. My audio sensors faltered. The damage was escalating. And then—
“Philly! What the hell?!”
Lorette.
“This creep showed up! I’m teaching him a lesson!”
“You IDIOT! You broke it! Dad’s going to kill you when he finds out!”
Of course she didn’t care about me. Only about the trouble.
A few moments later, a man in uniform—an officer—threw me in the back of a patrol car. Said he’d return me “where I belonged.”
I had failed. And worse—I had proven to Will just how fragile I really was.
