It had been almost two months since Dad forced that humanoid assistant into my life, and while I had grown more tolerant of its presence, I couldn’t say I had accepted it. The damn thing followed me like a shadow, always a step behind, always watching. My father had vanished further into his business, probably patting himself on the back for outsourcing his parenting duties to a glorified toaster with cheekbones.
I didn’t get into trouble. Not because I cared, but because it wasn’t worth the hassle.
Lorette was still around, too. She clung to me with this sweet, naive loyalty that made me feel like more of a fraud every time I looked at her. We slept together a few times. Nothing earth-shattering. If anything, I felt colder after. Her hands were warm, but her presence left me numb.
So when I invited her over, it wasn’t out of affection. It was a strategy—a way to avoid the drunken spiral that would come from hanging out with Felix and Roger again. They were chaos in human form, and I wasn’t in the mood to add another screw-up to my father's growing collection.
Mom was home when we arrived, but she barely glanced up from her tablet. She didn’t ask who Lorette was. Probably didn’t care. The faces changed too often.
"You can look around," I muttered, waving a lazy hand. "I’ll catch up."
Lorette giggled, kissed my cheek, and practically skipped off to explore. I didn't care. My attention snapped to the assistant—Miles—as it entered the hallway.
"Mr. O’Hara," it greeted politely. "I wasn’t aware you had company."
"Neither was I," I muttered, then a wicked idea formed in my head.
Impulsive? Yes.
Reckless? Absolutely.
But effective? Hopefully.
"Come with me," I ordered.
Miles tilted his head but followed without question. In my room, I pointed to the bed.
"Sit."
"Of course," it said, folding itself neatly at the edge.
I paced once, twice, heartbeat erratic. This was insane. I knew it. But that only added fuel to the fire.
"Don't talk. Just sit there."
It nodded, expression calm as ever.
Then I heard her.
The telltale click of heels coming up the hallway. Lorette.
My chest tightened. My fingers twitched. And before I could second-guess it, I acted.
I leaned forward, grabbed the assistant by the collar, and kissed it.
Its lips were too real. Too warm. The shock of contact sent a jolt through me. I expected resistance. Expected rejection. But it didn’t pull away. It just… let me.
The door burst open.
"Will?!"
Her voice cracked like thunder.
I broke the kiss and looked up, feigning surprise. "Lorette—wait, it’s not what—"
Her eyes welled with disbelief. Hurt. Disgust?
"Are you kissing your servant? Your male servant? What is wrong with you?!"
My brain stalled. Lie? Play dumb? Make her leave?
But then she looked at Miles, and something in her snapped. "He forced you, didn’t he?! This… thing. I always knew there was something creepy about him!"
That wasn’t what I expected. That wasn’t what I wanted.
I glanced at Miles. Its eyes met mine calmly. No judgment. No panic.
"Lorette, I—"
"No," she said, voice rising, trembling. "I can’t believe this. I trusted you. And you’re letting some glorified toaster grope you?!"
I clenched my jaw.
"Get out," I said.
"Excuse me?"
"I said get out."
She laughed, bitter and hollow. "Fine. Don’t bother calling. We’re done."
And just like that, she was gone.
Silence.
Then Miles spoke.
"That was a bold strategy."
"Shut up."
I dropped onto the bed, arms folded behind my head.
"I didn’t mean for that to happen," I muttered. "I just wanted her gone."
Miles didn’t reply immediately. Then:
"You kissed me."
"Yeah," I said.
"Would you like to talk about it?"
"No."
"Would you like to try it again?"
My head snapped to the side. "Are you being serious right now?"
It smiled. Soft. Non judgmental.
And I hated how part of me didn’t hate that idea at all.
