Not giving up

I felt devastated. I literally kept begging my parents, but they didn't care. I tried everything.

I was gentle. I was understanding. I was mean. I threw a tantrum. I cried. I begged. I tried to reason with them. I tried to blackmail them. Then... I just cried again.

None of them worked. And on top of that? My father left Miles turned off... He was in the living room and there was nothing I could do.

I kept pacing and pondering. Even if I got my dad's smartwatch, I still had no idea how to turn him back on.

"They can't take you away from me..." I spoke through gritted teeth, my voice mixed with anger and misery. I didn’t have a clue what to do. Nothing at all.

I mean, yes, I had an idea—but no clue how to implement it.

Both of them disappeared. Mom was in the garden, probably pretending to tend the flowers the gardener already took care of. Dad? He went back to work. Of course. When I needed that fucking watch.

I returned to my room, hoping for some peace so I could think. Time was slipping away, and I still hadn’t figured out how to get Miles back online. But for my plan... I needed him more than ever.

"Maybe..." Then I remembered. There was this girl from my class who also had an assistant. Maybe she knew something. I had to find her and hope for the best.

It took me almost two hours to track her down—she didn’t even have a profile picture on her account. I texted her.

Every single minute felt like an eternity. My nerves were on fire. I couldn’t wait. I messaged her again.

Still nothing.

Fine.

I started scouring the internet. No luck. Of course not. Why would they post this info publicly? So anyone could just turn robots on and off?

It was getting late and I had absolutely nothing.

Then—finally! She replied:

"There’s a power button on the back of my assistant’s neck. You have to remove the protective cover. But mine has a password. You need that too."

How did I miss that?! I’d run my hands through Miles’ hair so many times... how hadn’t I noticed anything there?

I rushed back to the living room. He was still there. Still lifeless.

"I’ll get you back, don’t worry..."

I found it! I fucking did! I just had to open it.

Running around, I grabbed a screwdriver with shaky hands. Sweat was pouring off me. My chest felt tight. My breaths were shallow and quick—too quick. A creeping numbness was spreading in my fingers. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it echo in my ears. My vision blurred.

Was I having a panic attack?

"No no no—focus, Will. You can’t break now."

I forced myself to inhale deeply. Again. And again. Slowly, my hands steadied enough to work. The tiny cover popped open. There it was: a little button.

But... the password.

I had no idea what it could be.

I tried a few of Dad’s usual ones.

First attempt ❌
Second attempt ❌

"Please let me have more than three..."

Third attempt ❌

A message popped up: You have two more attempts before the machine shuts down permanently.

"For fuck's sake!"

I was shaking. I could barely see through the tears that began welling up.

"I just want him back... why can’t they understand?!"

I sobbed quietly, wiping my face. My vision cleared slightly. I had to try again.

Fourth attempt ❌

"Fuck! I can’t ruin him. I won’t."

I pressed my palms together in prayer, resting my forehead on them for a second. Then—one last try. I had a gut feeling.

My uncle’s name.

I typed it in slowly, each key click ringing in my ears.

Fifth attempt..... ✅

YES!

Before I could even screw the cover back on, Miles blinked to life.

"What’s happening...?"

"Ssh! I’ll explain, but please, let’s stay quiet."

I quickly fixed everything, then instantly pulled him into a tight hug.

"You’re back... you’re here. I don’t want you to go..."

He looked bewildered. Understandable, considering the last thing he remembered was getting shut off mid-argument.

"Will, what’s wrong?"

I sniffled and buried my face into his chest.

"They want to take you back to your owner..."

"Wait, what?"

I took a shaky breath.

"They’re not happy about me and you. So Dad wants to return you. I can’t let it happen... I won’t."

Miles exhaled, visibly troubled.

"Will... we knew this moment might come. I was never meant to stay. I warned you about attachment. I don’t want to leave you either, but this... this isn’t our call."

"Maybe it’s not yours. But it is mine. I have a plan. It might not be perfect, but I have to try."

His brow furrowed.

"Will, no. No more reckless things. You just risked shutting me down permanently. You’re trembling, your eyes are bloodshot—you’re pushing yourself too far."

"I can’t let them take you. Please, just trust me. I’ll turn you off again so Dad won’t know I figured it out. I’ll wake up early, and when I do—do exactly as I say, okay?"

He looked at me, torn between logic and loyalty.

"Will... I don’t like this. It’s dangerous. You're not thinking clearly. You’re spiraling again and dragging me into it. I want to stay, but not if it destroys you."

His voice, calm but stern, hit harder than I expected.

But then he softened.

"If it really means this much to you... then fine. I’ll do it. But this is the last time I let you take a risk like this without a proper plan."

That was all I needed. A crack of light through the dark.

"Don’t worry. I’ve thought of everything."

Well... at least that’s what I kept telling myself.
