The sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow upon the majestic city of Jodhpur, painting the sky with hues of pink and orange as the day of coronation dawned upon the land. I stood at the edge of the bustling marketplace, stealing glances at the grandeur unfolding in the palace beyond.
Today was the day when Devansh, the noble prince of Jodhpur, would ascend to the throne as the king, marking the beginning of a new era for Jodhpur. My heart fluttered with a mixture of excitement and trepidation as I watched the palace guards bustling about, preparing for the momentous occasion.
It was two months ago when he had returned back to India after completing his higher studies. And I cannot deny, in the gap of three years of me, not being able to see him secretly, he has turned more handsome and charming than ever. Since the day he returned back, it was pre-announced that the Raj-tilak would be taking place today.
As a commoner, I would never have dared to dream of being part of such grand events, if Princess Devishi, Prince Devansh's sister wouldn't have been my best friend since the last fourteen years of my life. My father, a humble servant in the palace, had instilled in me the values of hard work and humility. Yet, amidst the chaos of the preparations, my thoughts were consumed by Devansh.
He was unlike any other prince I had ever known – kind, compassionate, and with a charisma that could light up even the darkest of rooms. Secretly, I harboured feelings for him, feelings that I knew could never be reciprocated. After all, what chance did a mere commoner like me have with the future king of Jodhpur?
Lost in my thoughts, I barely noticed the commotion around me until a familiar voice broke through the din.
"Jahanvi!" It was my father, his face beaming with pride. "Come, child, it's time to make our way to the palace. Today is a day to celebrate!"
With a nod, I followed my father through the bustling streets, my heart racing with anticipation. The palace loomed before us, its towering walls adorned with intricate carvings and shimmering in the morning light. As we approached the grand gates, I just felt my heart pacing more and more, because I knew, his one look was going to rob my heart yet again today.
Inside the palace grounds, the air was filled with excitement and anticipation. Noble guests adorned in their finest attire mingled with dignitaries from far-off lands, while musicians played melodies that echoed through the corridors. And there, at the center of it all, stood Devansh, resplendent in his royal attire, a crown of gold and jewels resting upon his head.
As Devishi's eyes fell on me, she waved her hand towards me, inviting me to join her, but I didn't. Because the entire place was tightly packed with guests. The royal families from different parts of India, Kashmir, Patiala, Jaipur, Karauli, Dholpur, Alwar, Kishanga and many more places. Many important people like politicians and the chief minister himself was present too. Thus, I shook my head with a smile, not wanting to join with people of such high class.
And suddenly, when my eyes moved back to see Kunwar Devansh, my heart skipped a beat as our eyes met, and for a brief moment, it felt as though time stood still. But then reality came crashing back, reminding me of the vast divide that separated us. I was merely a commoner, while he was destined to rule as king and I immediately looked away.
The ceremony started. The chants of the Vedas reverberated, and nagadas rang loud.
As the ceremony commenced, I watched from the sidelines, a silent observer to the historic events unfolding before me. Kunwar Devansh dressed in white achkan and traditional safa.
The Raj-tilak was performed and then he moved to take the blessings of elders. Rajmata standing behind him, who has done the parenting of Kunwar-sa Devansh, oops, Raja-sa Devansh, Kunwar-sa Krishiv and Princess Devishi all alone after their father died, when Devishi was 4. Their uncle had been ruling after that, but after his death few months back, it was decided that Raja-sa will be crowned.
Amidst the cheers and applause, my gaze lingered on Devansh, the man who had captured my heart from afar. And though I knew that our paths could never intertwine, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride swell within me. He proceeded towards the temple, meeting from the public people and acknowledging them with all his gratitude.
For today, as he was crowned king, I realized that love knows no boundaries – not even those of royalty and commoner. And as I watched him take his rightful place upon the throne, I couldn't help but hope that perhaps, just perhaps, destiny had a different plan in store for us.
