“We're leaving Jodhpur. Tomorrow morning. Maa decided to leave for our village, grandmother's home, we've house there, farms, Maa’s maternal family. We'll be staying there now.” She said calmly, as if our separation didn't matter to her at all.
It seemed as if someone just drew a knife through my chest and a searing pain arose through my heart.
I asked in a calm voice, “Are you able to listen to your words?”
She was looking away.
“Do you really think leaving Jodhpur is the solution to our problem? And do you really think I'll let her hurt your family any more?”
“They already did ! What else do you want, Dev?” she asked me in a loud voice.
I inhaled deeply.
“You're not going anywhere.”
“And who are you to order me that?” She asked dominantly.
All of a sudden, a wave of anger rushed inside me. I grabbed the nape of her neck from behind, pulled her close, looked directly into her eyes and spoke,
“YOU ARE NOT LEAVING JODHPUR. End of discussion.”
The audacity. She looked straight back into my eyes and replied, “If you think I was discussing, you're so wrong. I told you my decision.”
I pulled her even closer and whispered against her lips, “Then listen to my decision as well, Jahanvi. If I can love you with all my heart despite all the restrictions of this society pulling me back, I can also go to an extent to stop you from leaving me even if it means to force you and keep you as my captive.”
Her eyes flickered a different reaction for a second, but she instantly covered it up with confidence and replied back, “Do it and be ready to be hated by me.”
That word. That fucking word : hated by her.
I loosened my grip and freed her, taking a step back. My emotions returned. And I did what I wouldn't have done for anyone before. Nor will I ever do it for anyone else.
I joined my hands, and begged in a pleading voice, “I'm sorry this happened, Jahanvi. But I'm as innocent as you are. I'm as hurt as you're. If you leave me, I'll be lost, baby. Please. Please. I beg you. Don't leave me.”
All the confidence, braveness, left her face and tears started rolling down her eyes as she held my hand and stopped me from joining my hands.
She shook her head, her eyes filled with tears, but she wasn't looking into my eyes, neither was she speaking anything. It would be an understatement if I say I understand what her silence means. And this time it was screaming loudly that she has already made up her mind and in no condition would I be able to stop her.
I smiled sadly, weakly.
“You'll not change your decision, will you?”
She was silent.
