My whole body was literally tensed since morning. Because my mother-in-law — Maa-sa was going to officially handover the keys of this entire palace to me along with all the responsibilities.

Dev was standing right behind me, his hand slid around my waist from behind. He has been telling me positive things since a day before yesterday when the announcement was made, that I can handle it. I'm the best person for it. Still, my heart was pounding loud. I didn’t feel ready at all—how could I? The title of the titular queen wasn’t just ceremonial, it carried with it centuries of tradition, responsibilities, and expectations. And to step into shoes that felt impossibly large to fill, gave me goosebumps all over my body.

Every staff — attendees, house-helps, servants, chefs workers, caretakers, gardeners, guards, people from workplace — everyone was present in the hall.

"Today marks an important transition for this palace and for this family," Maa-sa said, her eyes sweeping over everyone present in the hall. "For years, I have carried the responsibilities of managing this palace of Jodhpur, ensuring that the legacy of the family and it's ancestors is upheld. But the time has come to pass these duties to my eldest daughter-in-law now."

"Beta," she called out and the velvet box in her hand was actually drying up my wind pipe.

Devansh whispered, "Go baby. I'm there, you don't have to worry. You'll always have my support. And I love you so much. Go now."

I gave him a nod and while I walked to her, my legs were honestly trembling beneath my saree.

"These keys," she said, opening the box and revealing the ornate bundle inside, "have been held by the women of this family for generations. They symbolize more than access to the palace—they are a representation of the trust, the responsibilities, and the legacy you are now part of."

My throat felt dry as I nodded, unable to find words. She extended the box toward me, and I hesitated, my hands hovering uncertainly. Did I deserve this? Would I ever be able to live up to the expectations that came with this role? Jahanvi, what the fuck are you doing?

Sensing my hesitation, Maa-sa spoke again, but this time her tone was soft. "I know this is overwhelming. It was for me too, when I first held them. But you are stronger than you think, Jahanvi. And you have Devansh by your side. Why are you tensed?" She laughed a little at the end.

"She is not only the wife of my elder son, Devansh, but also the new custodian of this palace. From today, she will take over the responsibilities that I have shouldered, and I trust that she will do so with grace, dignity, and strength."

The keys in my hand glinted under the chandelier’s light.

"As you all know, this palace is more than just a structure—it is a symbol of tradition, heritage, and responsibility. And I am confident that my daughter-in-law will honor these values as she steps into this role. The foundations and organizations being run on my name until now, will run under her name. She is the official owner of Udaan foundation, and Shourya organisation from today onwards. And ofcourse, Jeevika foundation will go to my younger daughter-in-law whenever she comes into our family."
