A New Life

(Alani POV) 15-16y

I woke up excited and practically jumped out of bed, I got ready as quickly as possible and raced to the kitchen to find mama making coffee, she looked at me in surprise
"What are you doing up mija?"
"Im just excited"
She chuckled and said " trust me, it's not as fun as you might think"
But I didn't care, today mama said I could start working at the bakery we had set up, ever since we moved from our old town and from my papa, my mama had gotten a good job and good sleep too.

We ate breakfast together and started to head for the shop, I looked around at the town we had been living in for the past year, it was bigger and much more vibrant and active then our old town and the mountans were much closer, still very far though.
I hadn't made any friends in this new town yet but that was okay, there were some people that talked to me almost daily but they were all adults, like the librarian who called me his best customer, I loved to read, it let me let go of reality and think up new ones, better ones.

I walked into the bakery and put on an apron, it wasn't my first time working here but today I was doing it for real, I was gonna be doing this every day now.

Some customers came and before I knew it it was lunch, so I was about to take a break when a group of kids came in, I narrowed my eyes at them, since the day I moved here these kids made it their mission to make my life miserable, but they were still customers so I asked what they wanted and surprisingly none of them ordered anything outrageous, but when I brought them their food one let out a yell

"Hey, this isn't what I ordered"
I walked back to their table
"I apologize, what would you Like"
"I want a refund"
And that's what happened with all of them, I sighed at the wasted time and went back to where we keep the money, and decided if they were gonna waste my time, I would waste theirs, so I grabbed the least valuable coin and started counting out their change, I was a fast counter and I soon had a bucket of money for them, I brought it to their table and said "here's your change, you guys can find a way to split it" they looked confused and angry and started to argue, I'm sure it will take them several hours to fully split it.

I walked home later while the sky turned dark, as I approached the house I saw all the lights were off, which was weird, my mama should be home right now
I cautiously entered and looked and but saw noone
"Mama?" I called out, but noone answered, then all the lights turned on and I heard someone yell
"Surprise!"
I jumped a foot in the air and whipped around to see my mama laughing on the ground
"You should've seen your face" she wheezed out between giggles
I smiled, I almost believed that mama had forgotten my birthday, of course she hadn't, she would never.
She handed me a gift and said "open this one now okay mija"
I opened it and saw a small locket on a chain
"No matter where you go, wherever life takes you, I'll always be with you"
I teared up a little
"Mama I don't plan on going anywhere without you"
Don't be sure miel, life is full of surprises"
We ate cake and eventually went to bed, my dreams filled with mountains and magic, and a yellow butterfly leading me away from the bad and towards a warm yellow light, the light was getting warmer, and warmer and brighter, I started trying to back up, it was too hot but it had boxed me in while I felt like I was melting

I woke up sweating bullets, thankful that it was just a dream, I could still feel the heat from the dream, and it wasn't going away, I shot up and looked around to see a fire eating at my door and coming towards me, then I started hearing screaming, I jumped out of bed and looked around in panic, I couldn't get out of my room, then I remembered I had a window and jumped out there, but I still needed to get mama out.

Once I was outside I realized what had happened, a group of raider s were on their horses setting every building they could on fire, and killing everyone in their path.

I ran back in the front door which hadn't burned yet and to my mama s room, where I found her unconscious on the ground, so I dragged her out the window and started frantically doing CPR, why did this happen, this was supposed to be our new life where nothing bad happened, tears started falling from my eyes but then mama coughed, and she put a shaking hand up against my face
"I love you mija, I always will, you know that right?"
"Stop talking like that, like you're gonna die, you're gonna be fine" I pleaded
"Mija, you need to get out of here, my time has come" she said in a raspy voice
"No mama, I can't leave you" I was sobbing now
"Remember mija, I will always be with you, now run" she pushed me away and I had no choice but to run, the raiders were approaching, one spotted me and let out a shout, and I started sprinting while they gave chase, I ran into the jungle in the direction of the mountains, luckily the thick shrubbery in the forest prevented them from following on horse, so they jumped off and started running after me,

I spotted small opening in the roots of a tree and jumped in before they saw me, and as I peered out through the tightly woven roots I saw some pairs of boots walk by and voices talking
"She couldn't have got far, spread out and find her"

I looked at the ground, thankful the wind blew away my footprints, then I saw something sparkle in the dust and realized what it was with a panic, the locket my mama gave me laid right at the raiders feet, and unfortunately he spotted it as well, lifting it into the light
"Well well well, what do we have here, her locket? Then she's definitely close"
He then commanded his men to set up camp because he was tired, he had to be the leader, if I was patient and waited for them to sleep then I could take it from his pocket.

My patience paid off and soon they were all snoring, I silently crept out of my hiding place and tiptoed to where they were sleeping, spotting a glint in the pocket of one, I reached a shaky hand closer, and closer, when out of nowhere a bird cawed loudly, but he just grunted and rolled over in his sleep, making the locket much more accessible, so I grabbed it quickly and was walking out, not looking where I was going, and I crashed right into their supply of pots and pans, creating a noise that woke up everything in a mile radius, including the raiders, so I just used the headstart of being awake and ran as fast as I could while they got up and ready.

Before I knew it the mountains were right in front of me and I was cornered, they men looked at me with sadistic smiles and slowly walked towards me, while I pressed my self into the cliff face, one of them jumped unexpectedly at me and out of instinct I kicked, hitting him directly in the crotch, he wheezed and fell to the floor while his companions stared in shock and I used the distraction to run out of their circle around me.

Spotting a gap in the mountain up ahead, I realized that this must be the split, if I could just get through there then I would be safe, I was almost to the entrance, to safety, when I got harshly Body slammed into the rock wall

I opened my eyes but everything looked fuzzy, I could hear words but didn't know what they were, the men walked towards me with their weapons drawn when a new Shape entered my vision, it was tall and wide, it looked like it was wearing blue pants or dress, and white on top, with dark hair in a bun, I watched as it threw the men around like sacks of potatoes, my vision steadily got blurrier and my eyelids got heavier, when the shape finished with the men it walked to me, and a pair of soft arms gently picked me up, then I blacked out.

Unrelated to da story i just came up with da best ur mom joke of all time
So ya know how girls get periods, well this is to those girls, if anyone ever goes, omg ur leaking, and you got blood on ya pants in the crotch, just say this.
