A Rainy Night

(Luisas POV)

 we walked the rest of the way to the house in silence, no one daring to say a word, when we arrived abuela sat everyone down at the table and started talking to me

"you are a disgrace, you've disappointed everyone in your family, now we wont be getting any new gifts from that side of the family all because of your disgusting love for another woman"

I looked at the floor in shame, I wanted to say something, to speak out against her but my mouth had glued itself shut.
but as abuela looked like she was gonna say more my mama stood up and talked right over her

"me and Agustin will support her no matter who she loves, and if you kick her out of encanto then were going as well",  then my sisters stood up and agreed, as did my cousins, then my tio Felix who soon convinced tia Pepa, soon the entire table stood in support of me against abuela, who just sat there in shock while my mama kept talking

"mama, you know how strong love is, it's the whole reason we have encanto and these gifts, abuelos love for you did this so don't try and stop my hija from loving whoever she wants to love"

abuela looked uncertain for a second before growing angrier and doubling down with "no! she is a weak failure, she failed her family!"

I looked up with tears in my eyes, had I really failed my family? was I really too weak? Isa tried to comfort me but i pushed her off and stood up, causing everyone to look at me and try to contradict what abuela had just said, but I ignored them and said 

"i just- I- shes right, I need to go outside, I need some frsh air"

and I ran into the night with every telling me to come back, I needed to prove I wasn't a failure, that I was strong enough, and I knew exactly how.

(Alanas POV)

I watched Luisa run out while I tried to call her back, how could Alma say those things to her, how dare she say she wasn't strong enough, I was about to give her a piece of my mind when Isa grabbed my arm and said "we need to go find her, now"

we ran outside with Dolores, Camilo, and Mirabel and started shouting Luisas name, except for Dolores who was trying to listen for her

"do you hear her Dolores"

"no not yet, wait I think-"

"what do you mean you think, you've never had trouble finding anyone before!"

we kept yelling for her when Dolores got a look of panic on her face and said

"we need to go, now!" 

she ran off into the jungle with us following and asking what she had heard, but she replied "its not what I heard, it's what I stopped hearing" and continued running

she suddenly came to a stop and so did we when we saw what was blocking the path, it was giant Hellbore, its face riddled with wounds, and its dead eye stared right at us, and Isa said "sometimes-, sometimes I forget how terrifying Luisas job is"

we stared a moment longer before seeing that Dolores had circled the body and seemed frozen in place, we circled as well and also froze when we say what lay there

Luisa lay face first in the dirt in a pool of blood and rain.

I immediately was at her side, yelling "Luisa! Luisa you have to wake up! please wake up!" but she stayed laying there, unmoving and unconscious.

~le time skip~

we sat waiting patiently outside the nursery while the adults were busy inside, namely Julieta.
Isabela was biting her nails when abuela appeared out of nowhere, and she instantly hid her hand behind her back while abuela asked "any changes?"

Dolores answered "not yet, she's unconscious but stable thanks to tia. when I stopped hearing breathing I thought, I-"

"do not concern yourself, she wouldn't die by something as trivial as a Hellbore"

we watched as she walked up to the door and loudly said "open up", the door was answered by Tia Pepa "mama, I don't think it's best if you come in right now, Julieta needs concentrate" but she was pushed aside as abuela ignored her words and instead talked to Julieta

"Julieta, any improvements"

"well, I managed to get her to drink some water so she's doing a little better, but I can't heal everything"

Luisa lay on the bed covered almost completely in bandages, Julieta continued "if the kids hadn't found her-"

"when will she be ready to work"

we all looked in shock while Julieta's face turned to anger

"seriously?! mama she is hurt! she need rest!" 

"shes wasting time, she needs to get stronger so this pathetic failure isn't repeated"

we just stared while the harsh words left abuelas mouth, she then turned to me and I was prepared for another berating, and was surprised when she said "I have decided that I can allow you to continue dating her, I don't want to lose my family, no matter how disappointing they are"

she said the last part while looking at Luisa who was still laying on the bed, then left without another word.
I rushed into the now open room and was instantly kneeling beside Luisa, the right side of her face covered by bloody bandages and I cupped her cheeks in my hands and whispered "I'm here, I'm here Hermosa" she must've heard me cause her breathing picked up and let out a drawn out groan of pain, and slowly tried to sit up.

she looked at me out her uncovered eye and said in a weak voice "i-im sorry, for running off like that and worrying you" I just hugged her and my eyes teared up

"it's not your fault, I'm just glad you're alive and so I'd everyone else" 

she gave me a weak smile "of course I'm alive, I'm not gonna die to some Hellbore"

"well you almost did, why did you run off like that?"

"I needed to prove to her that I wasn't weak, that I wasn't a failure, but I failed at that too I guess"

"you aren't weak or a failure, you are the strongest person I know and if she can't see that that's her problem, and you won't believe this but she said she was okay with us dating" I left out the rest of what she said

"she did? really? I'm so glad" she hugged me back and winced a little, she wanted to say something else but her mama had stuffed some food in her mouth and was commanding her to eat it

"Mija you need to eat, I know you'd rather talk to your novia but you need to heal first"

she ate and Julieta slowly removed the bandages from her face, revealing a fresh and angry looking cross shaped scar, reaching up to her forehead and through her chin, across her nose and to her neck under her ear, I gently ran my finger along it and said "Luisa, you scared me so bad"

she held my hand in hers and her eyes glistened

"I'm sorry mi amor, but it's just a scratch, I'll be fine"

eventually I had to leave while her mama continued healing her and I told everyone else how she was, they were all distraught, each person insisting they could've done something.

a few days later she finally emerged, her wounds healed, and the first thing she did was apologize and assured us it wasn't our fault, saying she was just glad to be up again.
