Bruce stared out the window of the guest room; he had been here about a week and loved being around his mate Clark, too. It was almost midday when Martha and Clark were out at work. He heard the door downstairs close and hurriedly stood. He made his way out of the room and made his way towards the stairs.
"I don't know, man. I don't think I can do it. The whole being mates thing. It just...I don't know," He heard Clark say and his heart sank. As he stood there and listened more, he didn't know what to do. He heard Clark coming up the stairs and hurried back to his room, tears running down his cheeks.
There was a knock on his door, and he quickly wiped his tears away before yelling for Clark to come. "Hey, I brought home lunch," Clark said and disappeared back downstairs. Bruce dried his tears and went downstairs.
They eat lunch together in silence before Clark has to head back out. "Clark, is there a body of water nearby?" he asks, just as Clark pulls on his jacket.
"Yes, there is actually a lake out back behind the barn, it leads out to the bay," Clark said, before rushing out the door.
Bruce watched him go before heading out the back door and toward the barn.
He found the lake and stripped off his clothes before diving in. His legs disappeared, and his tail reformed. He swam down the lake, following the flow until he came to the bay. He swam out as far as he could before stopping. By then, it was night, and he was extremely tired. He swam back to the spot where Clark first found him, sat down, and tried to fall asleep.
Clark was worried. It had been four days of looking for Bruce, and he couldn't find him anywhere. He sat back and ran his hands through his hair. His mom placed a cup of tea in front of him, and he took it up and dipped it.
"I don't understand where he could be. Why would he leave? Where would he go?" Clark asked her, and his mom shook her head.
"Maybe something came up?" She suggested and Clark turned away.
"But what?" Clark asked, stressed.
"Where have you looked for him?" His mom asked.
"I looked out to where the lake met the bay, and around that area," Clark said.
"Did you look where you first met?" Martha asked and Clark froze.
"I'm so stupid," He yelled before speeding out of the house.
He came to the spot he first met the mermaid a few minutes later and wasted no time diving into the water.
He swam under the water looking around for a few minutes until he found Bruce floating under some coral. He quickly swam over, touched the mermaid, getting his attention, and then pulled him to the surface.
Clark flew out of the water and took a deep breath. "Bruce, I've been looking everywhere for you," He said when Bruce's head popped above the water.
"Why did you leave?" He asked.
"I heard you talking on the phone, saying that you couldn't be my mate, that you couldn't do it. I thought it would have been best if I had left; it would not have put you under such pressure," Bruce told him, and Bruce frowned.
"I'm sorry," Clark said, hovering over him, resting both hands on his shoulders. " It is hard for me; I never thought of myself to be with someone because everyone I have met is human; I just needed to talk about it with my friend. I felt like I would have failed you if I accepted right away. I didn't know what to do, I'm just thinking about it. I want to make sure I can be a proper mate," Clark told him.
"Oh, I did not know that," Bruce said, frowning.
"Will you forgive me?" Clark asked and Bruce nodded, Clark smiled at him and pulled him closer kissing him for a few seconds before pulling away.
"Come home with me?"
