I ran out onto the empty stage and collapsed onto the staircase, tears streaming down my face.
I had finally managed to get away from my abusive ex-boyfriend, Aiden, but I didn't feel any better.
My arms were covered with lacerations, and a large bruise was forming over my right eye.
The room was so silent that you could hear a pin drop from miles away, and I was afraid that Aiden would jump out at me when I let my guard down for one brief second.
Suddenly, I heard rushed footsteps coming my way, and I immediately prepared to run as fast as I could.
But once the spotlight hit the silhouette, I deflated and sunk back down onto the stairs.
Ramin was standing about ten feet away from me, fully covered in his Phantom makeup.
If it weren't for his soft brown eyes, I probably would not have recognized him at all.
His expression was the perfect picture of horror as he said, "Oh my God."
I turned away from him and hid my face, ashamed at my hideous appearance.
He quickly closed the gap between us and kneeled down in front of me.
"Avery," he whispered. "What happened to you?"
"Go away," I replied while drawing in a shaky breath. "Don't look at me."
"I'm not leaving you here," Ramin said firmly. "Not like this."
I was touched at his caring personality, but I still didn't want him to see me in such a state, so I continued to ignore him like he wasn't there.
I heard him sigh, and then, he hooked his fingers under my chin and turned my head ever so gently towards him.
His eyes shone nothing but kindness to me, softening the hard shell around my heart.
"Let me see your face," he muttered, moving next to me. "It's okay."
"But I'm so ugly," I whispered. "How are you not terrified of me?"
"You're asking this to the guy who's face is deformed beyond belief," Ramin chuckled. "I think you're holding up just fine."
Despite the circumstances, I still managed to smile a bit and meet his eyes.
"I guess you have a point."
He smiled back and brushed my sweaty hair out of my face.
Then, he wiped a tear away along the edge of my bruise, but it caused me to wince in pain.
"Sorry," he murmured, observing my injury carefully. "We should get some ice on your eye before it starts to swell up badly. Your arms will also need to be bandaged before they get infected."
I nodded in response, and Ramin helped me up onto my feet, keeping his arms steadily around my waist.
He glanced down at me and said, "By the way, you are not ugly. I think you're absolutely beautiful."
My heart leapt at his comment, and he smiled while pressing a soft kiss to my forehead, instantly making me dizzy.
Just as we started to walk down the stairs, another silhouette came running in, but this time, it was not a welcome sight whatsoever.
My muscular ex, Aiden, slid to a stop on the stage, sweat dripping down his face.
His jaw was clenched tightly, and his expression was contorted with rage.
