Abigail rushed through the hallways of the hospital and avoided the gazes of all the nurses passing by.

Her heart was racing furiously in her chest, and her eyes were prickling with hot tears.

She thought she was in the clear for a moment, but then, she heard a familiar voice behind her ask, "Abigail, where are you going in such a hurry?"

She ignored Kian and continued walking towards her office, maintaining a quick pace.

His footsteps, however, caught up to her, and he placed a hand on Abigail's arm in order to stop her.

"Hey, hey," he said softly while looking at her in concern. "What happened? Are you okay?"

She shook him off and stepped backwards.

"Just leave me alone," she pleaded. "Stay away from me."

With that, she turned back around and ran to her office, but he was still right on her heels and calling her name.

Abigail almost managed to close the door before Kian squeezed through the gap and stepped into the room with her.

He then closed it behind them and tightly gripped her shoulders.

"What's going on?" he asked in a firm tone.

She tried to shrug him off again, but he stared at her intensely and demanded with his eyes that she speak to him.

Eventually, she gave up and deflated like a balloon.

Tears sprung freely from her eyes as she turned her back to him and recalled the scene that had just unfolded in front of her a few minutes prior.

She knew without a doubt that it was going to haunt her for the rest of her days, and her hands began to shake uncontrollably.

"I lost one of my patients," Abigail whispered, her voice barely audible.

There was a long pause, and then, Kian uttered one word: "What?"

She refused to repeat herself, so she let the silence linger like smoke in the air.

When Kian spoke again, his words were as heavy as steel.

"Is this your first time?"

Abigail turned around and told him everything with her grief-stricken eyes.

He immediately stepped over to her and pulled her limp body into his chest.

"I'm so sorry, Abby," he muttered, kissing the top of her head tenderly. "Tell me if there's anything I can do."

She couldn't speak for a moment due to crying, but she eventually croaked out, "Hold me."

He tightened his grip around her and said, "I'll hold you forever if you need me to."

Abigail's lips flicked upward for only a second at his words, and she knew that she was going to be alright as long as she had Kian with her.

It would take awhile, but with time, he would be able to heal her heart, just as he did for his own patients.

She snuggled closer to him and soaked in his comforting touch, blessing the gods for giving her such a wonderful man.
