This is a little random chapter because I've been so slack lately so I quickly finished this one and posted it. I swear I'll try and get faster at posting 😭😭

"Hey mom! I'm home!" My teenage daughter called from downstairs, and I heard the front door slam shut.

"Hey Soph! How was school?" I yelled back as I abandoned my guitar, making my way into the living room to see her. I almost stopped in my tracks when I watched her walk past me, with some guy.

"Oh? Hello." I stuttered, and the boy stopped and looked at me, then stuck out his hand.

"It's so nice to meet you. I'm Josh." He smiled sweetly, and slowly, I shook his hand.

"Josh- hello." I stammered my words, glancing at my daughter.

"He's my boyfriend." Sophie shrugged, as if it was nothing. She'd had boyfriends before, but she'd never brought one home with her.

"Oh- he's- okay." I tried to play it cool, but my heart was twisting and shattering in a million different ways right now. He looked older than her. Maybe it was just because she still feels like my little girl, but I could've sworn he's older. And I hadn't heard a word about this boy.

"How old are you Josh." I spat out, without even thinking.

"Mom!" Sophie complained, but I ignored her, staring straight at him.

"I'm in my second year of college." He smiled, and I watched Sophie sigh.

"Oh? College?" I smiled through the aching pain in my chest. My high school baby daughter had a boyfriend in college?

"He's only two years older then me mom, it's fine. Come on babe." Sophie slightly tugged his hand and started heading for the stairs.

"Wait- where are you going?" I fretted, and my heart sped up.

"My room?" She muttered, as if it was obvious, before disappearing up the stairs.

I stood there, truly shocked to the core. I winced slightly when I heard her door shut and lock, and had to sit down on the couch. Breathing deeply, I sat staring at the wall for almost a full 30 minutes, until Travis walked through the front door.

"Hey beautiful-..." He stopped and stared at me, furrowing his eyebrows, "You okay? What happened?"

"Sophie." I managed to spit out, and I felt the weight of the couch shift as Travis sat down next to me.

"Sophie? Is she okay?" Travis asked, rubbing his hand gently over my back.

"She's- there's a boy. In her room. Right now. He's in college." I muttered, my breath hitching at every word I said.

I looked at Travis, and noticed the way his eyes filled with rage.

"Oh- absolutely not." He got up and marched up to Sophie's room, but I grabbed his arm, turning him around to stop him before he could reach the staircase.

"No, Travis. We have to leave them." I said calmly, and as much as I didn't want to be right, I knew I was. She's 17 years old, she should be allowed to have a boy in her room with the door closed.

Travis stared at me like I was crazy, then took a deep breath. "Mhm. Yep. Okay." He mumbled.

"You know she'll hate us if we try and interrupt them." I said, and Travis nodded,  very slowly. "Let's just... start making dinner, and leave them alone."

Travis and I both got settled in the kitchen, moving around each other as we made dinner, trying our best to distract ourselves from whatever our daughter was doing upstairs.
