"Good morning beautiful girl." I looked up at Travis as I stumbled, still half asleep into the kitchen. He stuck out his hand, holding a steaming mug of what I assumed was coffee, and I smiled gratefully, reaching out to take it from him.
"Thanks Trav." I mumbled as I embraced the warm mug in my hands. Together, with our mugs of coffee, we went to sit on the couch, and I curled up next to Travis, leaning my head against his chest. This was a normal morning for us. We'd been together for nearly 22 years, and were still just as obsessed with each other.
"So... last night." Travis said carefully and quietly, and I sighed, reluctantly wanting to speak about the topic, but knowing we would.
"Look, as long as Sophie's happy, that's all we want. We've raised her to be a good person, and to make her own decisions. If anything happened last night, I trust that she was ready." I said.
"Yeah, I know you're right." Travis sighed, and took a sip of his coffee. "You're such a good mom." He leaned down, and placed a soft kiss on my head.
"I just... remember what it was like to be her age. She's about to turn 18, and it's not our job to control her, more just... to lead her in the right direction. And if she makes bad choices, that's how you learn." I shrugged, and took a small sip of my still steaming coffee.
Travis nodded and abandoned his cup of coffee on the small table in favour of wrapping his arms around me. Smiling, I cuddled further up into his chest, so much that I could feel and hear his heartbeat.
We sat comfortably together, talking quietly until just after 9am, when Sophie and Josh walked downstairs.
"Morning guys." She half smiled, half muttered to us, as she walked Josh through the living room, heading for the kitchen.
"Good morning!" Josh smiled sweetly at both Travis and I, and I shuffled slightly in my spot.
We both gave a small 'good morning' before the two disappeared quickly into the kitchen.
"So it definitely happened." I mumbled, placing down my mug as I looked up at Travis.
"Oh yeah, for sure." He agreed, and I laid my head back onto his chest.
"I just hope she's okay... she's not too young, is she?" I questioned, suddenly starting to feel my heart race at the thought.
"Well, you first had sex at 18, right?" Travis asked, and I sighed, but nodded.
"Yeah, I guess so." Sophie was almost 18. Only a few more weeks. But still. She was still my little baby girl, and always would be. No matter how old she got.
The morning went on, and Travis and I stuck to each other's sides as much as Sophie and Josh did, with barely any exchange of conversation happening between the two couples. It was simply too awkward.
"Have fun at practice. Don't hurt yourself." I heard Sophie say a few hours later, and I popped my head out of the kitchen to see her and Josh walking towards the front door.
I quickly felt Travis rush behind me, and place his hands on my waist as we both subtly watched our daughter.
"I'll try not to." Josh laughed, and kissed my daughter's forehead. "What're you doing tomorrow night?" He asked, and I almost stopped breathing to make sure I could hear what they were saying.
"Hopefully seeing you?" Sophie giggled, and I let out a small laugh. She was 100% my daughter. I'd said exactly the same line to Travis many times at the start of our relationship.
"I'm taking you out. I'll be here at 6:30, wear something pretty, okay beautiful?" He said, and I watched my daughter's face turn dark red with blush. I couldn't deny that she was clearly happy in this relationship, and he was obviously treating her well.
"Okay. I'll see you then." She blushed even more, and Josh leaned in, then slid one hand around my daughter's waist, and the other cupped her face as he kissed her softly. Being the teenagers they were, this very quickly turned into them making out, before Josh pulled away, insisting he really had to leave or he'd be late.
Once he'd left and Sophie closed the door, she turned around and leaned against it, blushing and grinning ear to ear. After a second she looked up, and noticed Travis and I leaning against the wall in the kitchen.
"How long have you guys been watching?" She asked with a giggle, as she made her way closer to us.
"Uh-..." I mumbled, then pushed Travis away and stumbled into the kitchen with him, pretending to be busy doing something.
Sophie walked in, still smiling, obviously not really caring that we'd been watching her.
"Thanks for being so great last night." She blushed as she sat down at the table, pulling out her phone.
"Oh- you're welcome. Um-... how was it..? Did you-..." I started, and she cut me off.
"Yes. Yeah. We did. It was good. Really really good." She said quickly, not looking up from her phone. Understandable, she probably didn't want to talk about it. And in all fairness, I don't know why I asked the question, I didn't really want to know about my daughter's sex life.
"That's good! Yeah- that's good." I muttered, and looked at Travis, who was standing there uncomfortably.
"Alright... I'm gonna go upstairs now." Sophie said, her face bright red as she scurried off and up the stairs.
"This is fine." I said, half to Travis, half to myself.
"Yeah- it's fine." He repeated, and I nodded.
"This is good. She's... discovering her body. That's a good thing." I said, more trying to reassure myself than anything else.
"It is. And I think we handled it well." Travis said, and I nodded, agreeing. I know there are some parents that are super, super strict, but that was never going to be us. Obviously, we had rules for our daughter, but the truth is, now that she's growing up, she's old enough to make a lot of decisions on her own, and we didn't plan on stopping her unless we really thought it was a bad idea. In that case, we'd just gently nudge her in a different direction.
"Yeah, we've done well." I said, and went to lean against Travis' body, wrapping my arms around him.
He placed his hands around my back as he hugged me tight, and nodded against my head. "We have the best daughter."
I giggled, and lifted my head off his chest to look up at him, then lifted up my hand.
"High-five to us." I smiled, and Travis grinned, then clapped his hand against mine.
I intertwined my fingers with his, and stayed holding his hand as he leaned in to kiss me. God. How was I still getting butterflies from this man. 22 years, and I still blush, grin and feel my stomach spin when he kisses me. I guess that's what true, true love is. Unconditional, and never ending.
