"Alright, I think that's everything!" Travis said proudly as he shut the boot of the car, wiping his hands together.

"You know, I've never really done this before." I smiled, wrapping my arms around Travis from behind.

"A road trip?" He asked, turning around to face me.

I nodded, pressing my face into his chest, "We probably did long drives when I was a kid, but never to the extent of sleeping in our car." I giggled, and Travis hugged me tight.

"Well, there's a first time for everything."He kissed my head, and we both climbed into the car, Travis insisting on driving. I plugged in my phone and pressed play on the road trip playlist we'd spent a few days crafting, and Travis reversed out of the driveway, then we were on our way.

We didn't really have any destinations in mind, just a general direction we'd be driving, and a list of places we were allowed to park overnight. I knew we might sound crazy for actively choosing to sleep in our car, but we both thought it would be fun. Plus, we weren't entirely roughing it, we did have little motels booked in every second night so that we could shower. You wouldn't catch me dead showering outside with a bucket and a hose.

It was already mid afternoon by the time we'd left, and by about 7pm, we'd found ourselves in the carpark of national park. We were in the middle of nowhere, so the service wasn't great, and there was no one around. The lack of city lights made the sky light up with stars, and I could've sworn I'd never seen something so beautiful. I hadn't even known stars could be this bright.

"Are you hungry?" Travis asked, and I snapped my gaze away from the sky to look at him.

"Starving."

"Alright, why don't you sort out our sleeping situation, and I'll do dinner?" Travis asked and I nodded, agreeing.

I worked from the back of the car, moving as many bags as I could to the front seats, then folded down the backseats flat to create as much space as possible. Travis and I were tall people, but we had a huge car, so I wasn't worried about us not fitting. I unravelled the thin, foldable mattress and laid it out across the boot of the car, then took the piles of blankets and pillows we'd brought and set them out nicely, creating a cozy, nook-like bed for us. It almost looked like something you'd see on pinterest, if I'd thought to pack fairy lights it would be identical.

Smiling proudly at my efforts, I walked around to the side of the car, where Travis was sticking forks into two bowls, and handed one to me.

"Right on time! Your noodles, m'lady" Travis grinned sheepishly as he placed the bowl in my hands, and I smiled. Obviously food options were limited with our small portable stove and pot, but we'd make do just fine.

"Thank you sir." I giggled, playing along.

We sat together on the edge of the boot of the car, our legs dangling as we ate our noodles, the sky full of stars above us.

"This is kind of perfect," I said, taking a bite of my food.

"Kind of?" Travis teased, and I laughed, leaning my head on his shoulder.

"Okay, it's absolutely perfect." I grinned.

We continued to eat in a comfortable silence, just embracing the world around us. It was rare that either of us got to be outside, in public, and yet still alone. It felt so freeing.
