I fidgeted anxiously with the sleeve of my oversized sweater, well, Travis' sweater, while I awaited the imminent 'ding' of the oven timer. I had put off my usual holiday baking until the last minute this year, so here I was, on Christmas Eve, trying to make as many cookies as humanly possibly in one afternoon.
I wanted to make sure Travis had plenty to bring to his teammates tomorrow, and I had also promised Kylie I would bring some when we flew in to see them tomorrow night.
Both Travis and Jason had games on Christmas Day this year, which was creating quite the logistical nightmare when it came time to schedule a day to get the whole family together. At one point, we had even considered just celebrating Christmas in November as a double holiday with Thanksgiving, when everyone was supposed to be together for the Chiefs vs Eagles game, but that plan went awry when my show in Brazil had to be rescheduled.
In the end, we were able to squeeze in time for a one night trip to see Travis's family before he needed to be home for practice. Travis had been slightly surprised that I was willing to travel across the country on Christmas Day to be with his family, but I practically insisted, claiming 'he would do the same for me'. I also loved Christmas more than any other holiday, and was really looking forward to my first Christmas with Travis's entire family.
My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the timer going off. I very quickly took the cookies out of the oven, placing them on the counter to cool, and grabbed the next batch from the fridge. I got back into my speedy routine of separating the dough into balls and laying them out on the baking tray before throwing them into the oven.
Thankfully, this was my final batch, so all I had to do now was wait out the ones in the oven and ice the chai cookies, careful not to pour the cinnamon icing on the chocolate chip cookies, like I had accidentally done with the first few. After that incident, I had realised that maybe making two different types of cookies was a stretch, but it was too late to fix that now.
By the time Travis got home from practice that evening, I had baked, iced and bagged all of the cookies I had made, and was curled up on the couch with the cats scattered around me. Benji was laying the nearest to me, his head laying on the edge of my foot as his body sprawled out behind him, in a way that definitely wouldn't be considered normal for most cats, but I was used to Benji being a little bit special.
I had a random cheesy Christmas movie playing softly in the background as I caught up on some of my emails, my laptop illuminating my face in the room lit only by the soft lights of the Christmas tree.
"Merry Christmas Eve, my love," Travis said as he stepped into the living room, leaning over from behind the couch and pulling me into a kiss.
"Merry Christmas Eve baby," I smiled, closing my laptop lid and putting it aside to stand up and go give Travis a long awaited cuddle. We both wrapped our arms around each other as he slowly started to sway me side to side, my head resting on his chest. "How was practice? Feeling ready for tomorrow?" I smiled, turning my head upwards to face him.
"It was good. We're in good shape for the game, it should be a good one!"
"I'm excited to watch you play. Oh! And I almost forgot, I made cookies for you to bring for the guys tomorrow. I figured you all deserve a treat if you have to work on Christmas." I grinned as Travis shook his head, pure adoration in his eyes.
"You're the best, baby, the absolute best. I'm sure everyone will love them. Pat still talks about those ones you brought a few weeks ago." Travis laughed lightly, pressing a soft kiss onto my forehead.
