Travis POV

"Jesus," I grumbled quietly as I nudged open the back door and stepped outside, hugging my hoodie closer to my chest. Winter in Kansas City was no joke.

Scanning the patio for my wife, I sighed when I noticed her sitting on the edge of the pool, her legs dangling in the water. I'd searched the whole house for her, so I was thankful to find her, but couldn't believe she was sitting out here in her pyjamas; it was beyond freezing.

Frowning, I walked over towards her. "Tay?" I said softly, and she turned to look up at me.

"Oh- hey," she murmured, and turned her attention back to her floating feet.

I knelt beside her, the frosty ground chilling through my sweatpants. "You shouldn't be out here baby, it's freezing," I fretted, rubbing a hand against her back.

She shrugged, her fingers absentmindedly tracing circles on her swollen belly. "I couldn't sleep," she admitted, her breath forming misty clouds in the cold air.

I sat down beside her, unsure of what to say. The baby was a few days overdue now, which was to be expected since this was Taylor's first baby, but I knew it was taking a toll on her. Her body was exhausted, and she'd spent a good part of the past few weeks being overly stressed about the birth.

"What's going on?" I asked gently, wrapping my arm around her shoulders.

She hesitated, her gaze dropping to her feet dangling in the still water. "I think I'm in labour," she confessed in a whisper, her hand pressing against her belly as an obvious wave of discomfort washed over her. "Just the early stages... but I think it's started."

Letting a small smile slip onto my face, I nodded. We'd been waiting for this day. "Are you having contractions?"

"I think so." She murmured, her voice shaky.

I paused and nodded again. I had done my research on labour, and knew that, especially for first-time mothers, these early stages can last a long time. Taylor wouldn't want to stress about it right now, and making a big deal of her being in labour would only freak her out. She was already nervous enough. "C'mon, we need to get you inside, you're freezing," I said, quickly standing up.

Taylor nodded weakly, allowing me to help her to her feet. I wrapped an arm around her waist, holding most of her weight as we walked back inside together.

I helped her back up the stairs and to our bedroom, where I helped her get as comfortable as possible in bed.

"I don't think I can sleep." She mumbled, pulling down the tank top that continued to ride up her belly.

"Why don't we go over the birth plan?" I asked, knowing that might help her destress. She'd spent many hours of the past few months perfecting every detail of her birth plan. It made me a little nervous that she was so adamant that everything goes to plan, because I know that doesn't always happen in labour, but she was confident that everything would be fine.

"Yeah... yeah I think that'll help." She murmured, staring down at the belly she cradled with both her hands.

We spent the next good part of an hour discussing the entire plan, for about the tenth time since she'd perfected it. I knew her anxiety had gotten worse with all the added hormones during pregnancy, and having a plan this detailed was her way of staying calm about the whole thing.
