"Why do you have to say that we're a couple?" Kaede asked with a slight whine as she left the hospital room with Osamu after her grandmother had returned to her dementia and forgotten everything again. "Because she'll forget it again anyway." Osamu said, and he didn't mean it ruthlessly. It was a fact and there was nothing anyone could do about it.
"Yes, but..." "Admit it, you were embarrassed." Miya said, slightly amused, which he was happy to take advantage of now. As soon as his brother whined, he used the situation to tease him a little. Kaede just gave him the perfect template for it.
"I..ehm..well..." Kaede stuttered slightly, immediately becoming quiet again. Somehow, she couldn't say anything back to Osamu, which had been much easier with Atsumu. Around Osamu, Kaede barely managed to have her typical strength and patter.
"You saw the way she was beaming, didn't you?" asked Osamu again, a little calmer and in a normal tone. "Yes, I did. It was never like that with Dai. And I gave him a lift once when he was nearby for a football match."
"I wouldn't shine with him either." came quite coldly and directly from Miya. Kaede realized that he hadn't been on good terms with Dai since that one incident. But Osamu had always been kind enough not to say anything negative. And because of her.
"I already know. You didn't like him." Kaede said, showing him that she had noticed and known it long ago. His look and his voice were clear that day. "I was just naive and stupid."
"You're not stupid. Naïve, maybe a little. But I guess that's how everyone is when you're in love." Kaede wasn't stupid to him at all. Not even when it came to school subjects.
"But would it be that bad?" he asked, getting back to the topic at hand. "Huh? What do you mean?" Kaede asked, slightly confused, which made Osamu grin again. Sometimes Kaede really wasn't present. How could she herself forget what they had just been talking about?
"That we're a couple." he said directly, to which there was no response. Rather, Kaede looked away from him, probably trying to find words. It wasn't the first time he had told her directly how he felt.
"Hm...No...", Kaede mumbled to herself and brushed her hair out of her face, which had fallen slightly. She hadn't forgotten what he had said in the gym. She hadn't forgotten his innuendos. Nor had she forgotten his small and large gestures.
Her heart raced as Kaede thought back to the day she had first seen Osamu. It was the classroom of 1-3, which he had entered when she had looked up at the clock. Still busy with her own books she had taken with her.
Her subconscious had always known. It was not without reason that the Dai did not play the leading role in her novel. It was not without reason that Kaede had chosen Osamu at the spring tournament. Her heart knew it before her mind did. Her feelings gave her several signs that Osamu had to be the one.
But Kaede had always believed that Dai would always be her boyfriend. After all, she had known him longer. But in the end, this young middle school student had developed into a toxic, jealous and almost aggressive young man. And that was exactly what Kaede had fallen for, because she had been naive. Because she had believed that she loved Dai, as he had always been with her as much as possible.
She had probably lied to herself over the years. To herself and her feelings. His appearance after her autograph session made her realize all these feelings again. Osamu had never been just any boy in her class. Not just any volleyball player who was in her life.
No, Osamu was much more than that. He was the one she always wanted to trust. She wanted to tell him everything and almost did because of the incident with Chika. But her fear at the time was far too great to tell him directly and to allow these feelings.
"Osamu I..." Kaede began to say, who had stopped. "I...always made you wait..." she finally spoke. Actually, Kaede was really mean to him. Osamu must have really had a thing for her the whole time. Little to nothing came from her.
"I was just waiting for you to realize about Dai. Everyone needs time and, according to your novel, you were never really sure. So I could only wait and hope that the backpack thrower would finally realize her true feelings."
Kaede huffed softly in amusement. It was nice that he had noticed it first. Maybe she really was a little bit stupid.
"Look at it this way. What you have planned for Kyoko, you now have in front of you." Osamu smiled slightly. "You're only saying that now because you're Oijro and you got together with Kyoko in the novel."
"Hm, no. I'm saying that because you've made progress just like Kyoko and you've earned it yourself. Especially after everything that's happened in your past. And as your book says. Blown away by life."
"I...would love to give you a line. But...I guess that would only work on Atsumu..." Kaede admitted and heard a short laugh. "He actually wanted to come with me. He said he'd like to see the backpack thrower and throw a volleyball at her."
Kaede laughed softly. So Atsumu still resented her. "I think...it was a good thing he didn't come..." admitted the brown-haired girl, who had raised her head a little more to look into his gray eyes. "That would have been more than embarrassing. I wouldn't have wanted to hear those remarks now."
Osamu was briefly confused by her appearance before he understood what she was talking about. Grinning slightly, he took a step towards the Tokoyami who had given him the promise. A promise for which he had certainly had to wait about seven years and had now been given the first opportunity to kiss the girl who had been taken all this time.
