THE PERFECT CRIMINAL

The long arms of the law are closing in on me,
The fingers try to grasp at a sin
Their calls for me echo the crime,
But the blood on my hands tells no tale
Of a mind behind the crimson scare

The wail of the siren carries wrath
The misguided hell hounds of justice
Assemble their weapons
A battle dancing on their radars' edge

Tears spill from my eyes;
Sobs heave my chest,
My mind runs through myriad scenarios
All ending with me as the murderer
How could I be?
These souls left their bodies before I ever set foot here

Tears pool in my eyes,
Countless streams with a common prayer:
There must be an escape.
What is justice,
When not served to the deserving?
What is a justice skewed by circumstances?
Should I fall into a grave reserved for another?
Or should I fight and build his grave?

Shaking hands and a resolute face,
The gun cocked, the dagger unsheathed
I bide my time slipping away,
The scarlet sight of the seething snipers
Tracking me like a bounty hunter
Breaths come in shallow waves,
Enough to keep the seams in place

The eyes of his victims bore into me,
Icy memorial to lives stopped and stories halted
Their pleadings, sorrows, pain and misery
Paint the picture of the merciless monster who claimed their lives
This justice isn't just mine; it's theirs too

Footsteps of the soldiers of law hit the ground.
Tap, tap, tap,
Thump, thump, thump.
A false sense of righteousness permeates the air
Targets locked; The trigger is pulled,
The bullets hit the hell hounds,
And they fall to the ground
One after the other,
The pain just enough to maim

A hollow heartless howl of laughter echoes through the dismal scene,
The criminal arrived to claim his fame
A fleeting relief, a smile laced with dread,
Fate's cruel hand releases the fight within
But his eyes flash with a menacing tale,
His smile carries a sinister edge

A chill runs down my spine,
My eyes widen in shock,
Realization floods home
As I fall down on my knees,
My eyes question the truth.
Alas, winning was never on my cards,
I close my eyes with a defeated sigh.

His face is a mirror;
And I'm the perfect criminal.
