He quickly retrieved his snake camera and carefully slid it under the door, angling it to capture any movement inside the room. Before he could even take a look at the footage, the door exploded violently, knocking both of you back and causing your ears to ring. Blurry and disoriented, you struggled to stand up, propping yourself up on your arm as you took in the chaos. Through hazy vision, you saw two AQ soldiers and Hassan fleeing the scene with a briefcase in tow. You grabbed your gun from the ground and opened fire at the retreating figures, aided by Gaz who had also regained his footing. "Y/n, let's move!" Gaz yelled over the ringing in your ears. "Watcher, we have a visual on Hassan with the missile controls. We're going after him." You reported into your comms. "Copy that, be advised that the missile is headed towards D.C. Time is of the essence." Laswell's voice crackled through the speaker. "We'll get 'em." You replied confidently as Gaz took point and led you outside of the elevator that had been blown apart.
The car was stuck on the floor below yours, so Gaz ordered you to take point and make your way down using other lift cars. With his cover fire providing protection, you leaped onto each car until you reached the last one where Hassan was located. Taking a deep breath, you jumped through the roof of the elevator and landed on top of Hassan with a thud, feeling pain shoot through your back upon impact. But before you could even process what was happening, Hassan was reaching for your gun and you quickly grabbed the briefcase from the floor and stood up just as Gaz's bullets found their target, shooting at Hassan to slow him down. Without wasting any time, you sprinted down the hall with control over the missile in your hands. "Y/n, what's your status?" Price's voice came through the comms. "Construction floor. Controls secure. Lost my weapon." You reported while ducking under a nearby table covered with a tarp to avoid detection from the approaching soldiers. "Copy that, stay out of sight Y/n. Watcher-1 is taking over comms." Price instructed as you caught your breath and prepared for the next stage of the mission.
Laswell's voice crackled through your earpiece, her words careful and concise. "Y/n, the missile has been launched, so you'll have to trigger the detonation remotely." You nodded, steeling yourself as you opened the heavy briefcase in front of you, revealing a complex control panel with buttons and screens. "Shit...the target is really Washington D.C." You confirmed with a sinking feeling in your gut. "Coordinates: thirty-eight, negative seventy-seven." You recited as Laswell's voice grew more worried. "That's the Pentagon." She said grimly. "He's going for Shepherd." You whispered, knowing the gravity of the situation. "No, Shepherd is already gone." Laswell corrected. "Yeah, well there are still 30,000 who haven't. We have to finish this now." Ghost interjected firmly.
You focused on the task at hand as Laswell gave you instructions on how to initiate diagnostic mode. With a deep breath, you pressed the designated buttons simultaneously and a new screen appeared, filled with rows of numbers and letters. "I'm in." You reported to Laswell. "Next step is the override. What is in row two, column three?" She asked urgently as Hassan's shouting grew closer.
The words "0ESP" came out of your mouth in a rush, the surge of adrenaline pulsing through your body as you followed Laswell's instructions to initiate the override sequence. Your fingers flew over the keyboard, typing in the necessary commands. "That did it," Laswell said calmly. "Now hit left and clear to initiate override." You complied quickly, feeling a sense of urgency as Hassan's voice grew louder and closer. "Override on," you announced, bracing yourself for what was to come next. "America is soft and weak," Hassan's shouts echoed through the halls, sending shivers down your spine. "They start wars, but they have lost the will to fight." The gravity of his words weighed heavily on you as you heard Laswell's calm voice over your headset. "Copy, get safe. This next part will make some noise." You scanned the area for a safer spot, knowing that what was about to happen would draw attention. "Stand by," you reported back, readying yourself for whatever was to come.
"Copy that. Stay safe and get out of there," came the urgent voice through your radio. Your heart raced as you scanned the room for an exit. You noticed a door on the far side of the room, dusty and seemingly forgotten. With shaky hands, you made your way toward it, stepping over debris and discarded equipment. As you reached for the doorknob, your fingers fumbled with fear. Finally, the door creaked open and you stepped inside. The musty smell of old cleaning supplies filled your nostrils as you quickly locked the door behind you. Breathing heavily, you sank to the floor amidst shelves stacked with mops and brooms. Your eyes darted around, searching for anything that could be used as a weapon to defend yourself. You grabbed hold of a broken mop handle and a pair of scissors, ready to defend yourself against any danger that may come your way.
"All set." You reported to Laswell, your voice unsteady with nerves. "Last step is to hit 'link' when the green light lines up in the fourth position." She instructed calmly. You watched the green circle intently until it reached the desired position and hit the designated button with shaky hands. A loud beeping noise filled the air, signaling that the missile had been successfully detonated. "It's done." You confirmed, relief flooding through your body as you leaned back against the wall, catching your breath. Laswell instructed you to stand by as the Air Force confirmed the explosion. Taking a moment to catch your breath and process what had just happened. Switching over to a private line with Ghost, you asked how he was doing.
"Ghost..." You said softly into the headset, needing some reassurance after such a tense mission. "Y/n, are you okay?" Ghost's voice was full of concern. "Yeah, I'm okay. Are you?" You asked him quietly. "Just waiting for confirmation." He replied before adding with a hint of humor in his tone, "Sounds like Hassan is still causing a ruckus over there." You chuckled softly in response. "What comes after this?" You asked, feeling emotionally drained but also curious about what would happen next. "I'm not sure yet. Let's just make sure we have an 'after' before we start thinking about anything else." Ghost reminded you wisely. Nodding in agreement, you couldn't help but smile at his words. With Ghost by your side, you felt confident that you could handle whatever came next.
