The snow fell softly outside, blanketing the streets in a serene white as you and Simon settled into your new routine. The early stages of pregnancy hadn't changed much physically, but the anticipation simmered beneath the surface of your daily lives. It was still too early to share the news with everyone, but that didn't stop you and Simon from stealing glances, whispering about your future, and quietly preparing for the little life growing inside you. Morning began with the sound of the kettle whistling in the kitchen. You sat at the dining table, wrapped in a cozy sweater, staring out at the snow-covered yard. Simon moved quietly around the kitchen, making tea and fixing breakfast. His movements had become more careful, more deliberate, as if he wanted to wrap you and the baby in a protective cocoon.
"Toast with jam?" Simon asked, placing a plate in front of you with a soft smile. You nodded, offering him a grateful smile in return. "Thanks, Si." He sat across from you, his mug of tea steaming between his hands. The mornings were peaceful like this, a quiet domesticity that felt worlds apart from the chaos of missions and the intensity of your past life. There was a new intimacy in these small, shared moments, a quiet understanding that your future was changing, one day at a time. "When do you think the others will get their leave?" you asked, spreading jam across your toast. The thought of seeing Soap, Price, and the rest of the team made your heart ache with excitement and nervousness. You hadn't told them yet, wanting to wait until the right time.
"Not sure," Simon replied, leaning back in his chair. "Soap's been texting. They're still waiting for clearance, but it shouldn't be too long." You could picture Soap's impatience, pacing back and forth, probably pestering Price to hurry up the process. The thought made you chuckle. "I bet he's climbing the walls by now." Simon grinned. "Bet he is. I wouldn't be surprised if he's packed and ready to go, just waiting by the door." The two of you fell into a comfortable silence, the ticking of the clock on the wall the only sound between you. These moments, though quiet and uneventful, held a new significance. Every step forward was a step into unknown territory—parenthood. The idea still scared you, but with Simon by your side, the fear felt manageable, like you were taking it on together.
"I was thinking," Simon said suddenly, breaking the silence. "We should start looking at places for the nursery." You raised an eyebrow. "It's early. I don't even look pregnant yet." Simon shrugged. "Never too early to start planning." The idea of turning one of the rooms into a nursery felt surreal, but it was also comforting. "Okay. We can start looking this weekend." Simon's eyes softened, a look of warmth and pride flickering across his face. "Good."
The day passed lazily, with both of you going about your usual routines. Simon spent some time in the parking garage, working on his new motorcycle while you cozied up on the couch with a book. There was a quiet contentment in these days, a slow buildup of anticipation for when your teammates would finally get their leave and join you. Soap had been texting regularly, asking for updates and dropping not-so-subtle hints about what was happening between you and Simon.
The afternoon drifted into a gentle calm as the snow continued to fall outside. Simon had finished working on his motorcycle and joined you in the living room, where you were curled up on the couch with your book. He sat beside you, stretching out his legs and letting the silence between you settle in comfortably. "You know," you said, breaking the silence, "I still can't believe we've managed to keep Soap quiet this long," you mused, sipping your tea, nestled into Simon's side.
