Chapter 17: One Step Ahead

"No!" Kubo said.

"Monsoon!? It can't be!" Lex said.

"This is ill news." Kubo said. "Drakeo's magic is that terrifying to persuade a Demon King?"

"Who is who?" Tatsumi asked. "Is Monsoon the tall one?"

"Indeed." Lex said.

"Is he strong?" Tatsumi asked.

"More than you can imagine." Lex said. "One does not get the title King of the Demon World otherwise."

"The Demon World is what exactly?" TJ asked.

"A cursed realm. The foul underbelly of this world." Lex said. "Just as you all are the physical exemplars of your own sphere. The terrifying specimen before you is the diabolical pride of his."

"What the hell? There is actual place called the Demon World and has a king too?" Lubbock said.

"Yes." Kubo said.

"So, the strange, hooded man with the long white beard is Drakeo?" Esdeath said.

"Yes." Lex said.

"No kidding? He sure doesn't look like much." Chelsea said.

"Don't be deceived." Lex said. "His magic makes up for his appearance. Magic potent enough to make a Demon King his puppet."

"This Monsoon let's himself get bossed around?" Akame said. 

"Well yes, but Demons are subjected to the kind of greed that answers readily to dark sorcery." Kubo said. "Their evil natures feed upon each other."

"Wait, Akame is a demon too." Najenda said. "Won't she be affected by Drakeo's magic as well?"

"No. As long as you have a pure heart you can't be affected." Lex said. "She'll be fine."

"Okay, that's a relief." Tatsumi said as he smiled. "Good to know that you'll safe from that wizard."

Akame then blushed furiously and looked away from Tatsumi. "Y-Yeah." Akame said.

"That is the secret of Drakeo's powerful hold." Kubo said. "Monsoon, Lukka, Doncic, every henchman is held captive by their own self-interest. Only those who can look past themselves are immune to an evil wizard's will."

"Be though as it may, I'm nonetheless shocked that the two are in league." Lex said. "Combined, their strength is beyond imagination."

"Surely, you're not suggesting that we can't beat them." Esdeath said. "So, the world as we know it ends and Lars awakens. Not if I have something to say about that."

"How the fuck did we get mixed up in shit like this?" Lubbock sighed.

Lukka handed the energy drainer to Drakeo.

"Excellent. It's brimming with energy." Drakeo said. 

"Yes sir." Lukka saluted.

"Nicely done. Lars' glorious return is imminent." Drakeo said.

"It was very easy." Doncic said.

"So, you wouldn't object to my letting you go." Drakeo said.

Drakeo, using his magic proceeded to slowly kill Doncic by making his body expand until he exploded as Night Raid and the others looked on.

"Now, the other one." Monsoon smirked.

Lukka, in fear, then flew away.

"Naco, please take care of him." Drakeo said.

"At once sir." Naco said.

Naco then aimed his hand at Lukka and fired a deadly energy at him which killed Lukka mid-flight.
