Hakeem walked back towards his friends, his hands shoved into his pockets, trying to mask his disappointment. He found KJ, Jaheem (J), and Darius (D3) lounging near a bench, engaged in their usual banter. When they saw him approaching, all three of them straightened up, curious to hear how his attempt had gone.
KJ was the first to speak, a grin spreading across his face. "So, how'd it go, man? Did you score a date?"
Hakeem shook his head, a wry smile tugging at his lips. "Nah, not this time. Amara's with her daughter, Namiko. She said it wasn't a good time."
J chuckled, nudging D3. "Told you, man. Amara's all about her kid. She's not gonna jump at the first chance for a date, especially in the middle of the mall."
D3 shrugged, looking sympathetic. "Hey, at least you tried. Most guys wouldn't even have the guts to ask her out. She's got that whole 'strong single mom' vibe going on."
Hakeem nodded, appreciating their support. "Yeah, I get it. Namiko's her priority. It's actually one of the things I admire about her. She's doing an amazing job raising that kid on her own."
KJ patted Hakeem on the back. "You're right, man. And who knows? Maybe she'll remember you made the effort. Just keep being friendly, and you might get another chance."
Hakeem smiled, feeling a bit more hopeful. "Yeah, maybe. I'm not giving up just yet. She's worth it."
J raised an eyebrow, a teasing glint in his eye. "You got it bad, don't you? Amara must be something special."
"She is," Hakeem admitted, glancing back towards the food court where Amara and Namiko were. "She's strong, beautiful, and she's got a good heart. It's not just about trying to get a date. I respect her, and I want to get to know her better."
D3 nodded in agreement. "Then keep doing what you're doing. Be there for her, show her you're serious. She'll come around when she's ready."
Hakeem appreciated the advice, feeling a renewed sense of determination. He knew building a relationship with Amara would take time and patience, but he was willing to put in the effort. For now, he was content with taking things slow and showing her that he respected her boundaries and her role as a mother.
"Thanks, guys," Hakeem said, feeling grateful for his friends' support. "Let's head to the arcade. I need to blow off some steam."
As they made their way to the arcade, Hakeem couldn't help but glance back one last time. Amara and Namiko were at the ice cream kiosk, sharing a moment of joy. He smiled to himself, knowing that he would continue to be patient and respectful. After all, good things were worth waiting for.
