After sharing the exciting news with her brothers, sister, and Namiko, Amara decided to call her dad to let him know about Hakeem asking her to be his girlfriend. She knew her dad's concern was rooted in his protective nature, especially after everything with Jabari.
"Dad, I wanted to talk to you about something," Amara started, her voice filled with a mix of happiness and concern.
"What is it, sweetheart?" her dad replied, his tone immediately attentive.
"Hakeem asked me to be his girlfriend," Amara said, smiling despite the seriousness of the conversation.
There was a brief silence on the line before her dad spoke again, his voice cautious. "Amara, I'm happy for you, but you know I worry. After what happened with Jabari..."
"I know, Dad," Amara interrupted gently, understanding his worry all too well. "But Hakeem's different. He's been so patient and kind with me and Namiko. He respects us, Dad."
Her dad sighed heavily, the concern evident in his voice. "I just don't want you to go through anything like that again, sweetheart. You deserve so much better."
Amara nodded, even though her dad couldn't see it over the phone. "I know, Dad. And I promise I'm being careful. Hakeem's shown me nothing but love and support."
Her dad fell silent again, processing her words. "Okay, sweetheart. Just promise me you'll take things slow and watch out for any signs, alright?"
"I promise, Dad," Amara reassured him, feeling a lump in her throat at her dad's protectiveness. "And thank you for looking out for me. It means everything."
They talked a bit longer, her dad sharing stories of Namiko's day with him and offering his usual fatherly advice. By the end of the call, Amara felt even more grateful for her dad's love and support. She knew he just wanted the best for her and Namiko, and she was determined to show him that Hakeem was indeed different, someone who cherished and respected their little family.
