As Hakeem guided Namiko away from the playground, he kept a protective arm around her, trying to shield her from the tense atmosphere that lingered behind them. Jabari's words echoed in his mind, the anger in his voice unsettling but not unexpected given their history.
"Nah, man. You can't just take her away from me." Jabari's voice carried across the playground, his frustration evident as he followed them. "She's my daughter, I have rights!"
Hakeem turned to face Jabari, his own voice steady but firm. "Jabari, you know how things are between you and Amara. She deserves better than what you've put her through. Namiko deserves better."
Jabari stepped closer, his stance aggressive. "You ain't her dad! You can't just come in here and act like you know what's best for her."
Hakeem met Jabari's gaze without flinching. "I may not be her biological father, but I care about Namiko. And I care about Amara. You need to respect that."
Namiko tugged on Hakeem's hand again, her voice small but insistent. "Hakeem, I'm scared. Let's go home."
Jabari shouted after them, his protests fading as they walked away. Hakeem focused on comforting Namiko, reassuring her that everything was okay as they made their way back to Amara's place.
Later that evening, Hakeem called Amara to let her know about the encounter with Jabari at the playground. Amara listened quietly, her voice filled with concern as Hakeem recounted the tense exchange.
"I'm sorry you had to deal with that, Hakeem," Amara said softly. "Thank you for protecting Namiko."
Hakeem sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I just want to keep her safe, Amara. And you too."
Amara's voice was warm with gratitude. "I know you do, Hakeem. And I appreciate it more than I can say."
They talked for a while longer, discussing how to handle future interactions with Jabari and ensuring Namiko's well-being remained their top priority. Despite the challenges they faced, Hakeem felt a renewed determination to support Amara and Namiko, knowing that their bond was worth every effort to protect and nurture.
