The week had come to a halt. It was the day of, and oddly enough. Nerves weren't knocking at Mia's doorstep just yet. She was dealing with a whirlwind of other emotions. In fact, she admittedly felt a little cocky about the whole situation. She had talked to many of her peers, old, young, romantics and sensualists. She wanted the perfect balance of old-school and modern. To encapsulate a proposal that wasn't just soppy, but realistic. Realistic in the motion that love can be expressed in a number of ways, and it was okay to be better at some compared to others. Love had always been about compromise.
Before meeting Charlotte, Mia's life had such little purpose, and it was obviously cliche to say that. To say that she only saw her life in colour once Char was in it. She only had a spring in her step when she was around...
You know, that kind of proposal? That wasn't what Mia wanted to bring to the table.
She wanted to bring the most loving she could, the most honesty she could, the most gut-wrenching confessions she could. Entirely.
It was no secret that the pair were all about physical affection. Whether it was kissing in the carpark or always holding hands whenever they were remotely close to one another. It was as plain as day. So to then be sitting up night after night, writing a declaration of her love, wasn't foreign territory for the redhead, but it had certainly rendered her anxious on occasions more than one.
In the end, the few days leading up to the actual date, Mia had scrapped the idea of writing her ideas down and reading them, what had to come from her, would need to be from the heart. Even if she messed up a little, or even if something didn't go to plan. She knew that Charlotte would always love her regardless. That is all that mattered to her, and all she would care about for the rest of time.
Whatever hurdles life threw at her, as long as she had Charlotte by her side, she couldn't care less for anything or anyone else.
However, time was one thing mucking around with Mia's confidence. It felt like it was going too slow once she had called the salon to ask if Charlotte had arrived to get the full works done. Nails? Hair? Wax? Eyebrows? You name it, Mia had consistently paid for her to get these things done, so it was no surprise, but today's session was much more special.
Charlotte had gotten her nails done very similarly to the way she had done them the first time Mia had worked over from the sister nursery. The first time they had met.
Mia had made sure she had an array of black rose petals set up, on the little carpet walk to where she would propose. The first flowers she ever gifted Charlotte.
Charlotte had gotten her makeup done, very minimally. Sophisticated but gently. Enough to enhance her naturally beautiful features, just like she did months ago. The first time she kissed her lover.
Mia had made sure her hair was in that particular middle part, the time she had specifically styled her hair for their holiday to Italy. The first time they went on holiday together.
Whatever 'first's' the two ladies shared together, their relationship never grew to be boring or mundane. Each day was a preaching for the ability of getting even closer to someone you love. Learning more and more about her was always going to be thrilling for Mia.
As the day progressed, Mia found herself waiting for a text, the all clear to walk Charlotte down the private beach area. Awaiting the couple was a dimly lit area, with candles, beautiful pillows, and a small hut-like tent. The breeze of the wind and the salty aura encapsulated the pair as Mia guided her sweetheart down to where they would spend the evening.
The sun was setting, you could hear the waves in the distance.
Mia cleared her throat, not allowing Char to talk.
Mia took a deep breath, her heart racing with the weight of her emotions. She reached out and gently took Charlotte's hands in hers, feeling the warmth and softness that had become her sanctuary. As she looked into Charlotte's eyes, she saw the reflection of her own feelings—a mix of vulnerability, love, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude."Charlotte," Mia began, her voice trembling slightly, "I hope today has been an unforgettable day for you. As you know, I'm not particularly religious, but I've spent months praying that today would be perfect. Hoping I didn't mess up the menu for tonight, hoping I didn't ruin any of the pillows scattered here.
I think one thing I've overlooked, is that none of that really matters. The only way I could supposedly mess this up, is to not ask you to let me be yours forever."Charlotte began to sob, you could hear a squeal in her voice, an attempt to speak back, but her tears of joy told Mia everything she needed to know. So the redhead continued.
"From the moment I met you, I knew my life would never be the same. You walked into my world and brought light into the darkest corners of my soul. Your laughter, your kindness, your unwavering loyalty to those you love—they became the pillars of my existence. Pillars because you provided me with strength. Strength to let go of a hurt version of myself. To find the person who made me want to be safe, just so I could see their face one more time, everyday. Baby, we've always been written in the stars."
She paused, gathering her thoughts, her gaze never leaving Charlotte's. "To be with you is to experience a love that is raw, real, and profound. It's not always perfect, and we have our moments of doubt and fear. But it's those imperfections that make our love so much better. I don't regret the ugly moments we had and will have together, because we saw the worst of each other, to end up seeing the best of us.
You saw the worst of me, and you stayed. Charlotte, I will forever be indebted to you for the security you have brought to my life.
These bickers or fights continuously remind me that we are human, that we are growing and learning together, every single day."
Mia's voice grew steadier, infused with the sincerity of her words. "You are my safe haven, my partner in crime, my best friend. You saw the scars and the flaws, and instead of turning away, you loved me even more fiercely. Your love is a testament to the depth of your heart, to the incredible woman you are."
Tears welled up in Mia's eyes, but she continued, her voice breaking with emotion. "I promise to cherish you, to stand by you, to support you through every storm and celebrate with you in every sunshine. I want to grow old with you, to create a lifetime of memories, to build a home filled with love and laughter. I want to grow our already beautiful family, I want to come back home to you in every lifetime I live. Despite that, I want to be certain I've married you in this one."
Mia took a step closer, her heart pounding in her chest. Slowly lowering herself down onto one knee, giving her sweetheart a familiar smile, desperately holding back her tears.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box, her hands trembling as she opened it to reveal a beautiful, sparkling ring. "Will you do me the honour of being my wife? Will you marry me, Charlotte, and let me spend the rest of my days proving to you that this love we share is the most extraordinary gift I have ever received?"
Charlotte's tears mirrored Mia's, as they reluctantly fell down her face. She nodded, her voice choked with emotion as she whispered, "Yes, Mia. In every lifetime. Yes."
Mia slipped the ring onto Charlotte's finger, sealing their promise with a kiss once she had gotten up again. A kiss that was tender, passionate, and filled with the words of their hearts. Their souls intertwined.
She had finally done it, she had spoken, and had been heard. By the only woman that ever mattered to her.
To be here, in this open tent, holding her fiancée.
Our lovebirds had finally done it. Fiancée hm? I like it, has a nice ring to it, wouldn't you all agree?
