" What the hell, Goot, after all that shit?" Kurt asked angrily, giving him a nudge in the chest.
He had came back, alone, leaving Elle together with Finn, who had offered to let her stay the night. In different rooms of course. Elle had not seemed to disagree or object to the plan, and Alex did not want to be the third wheel, so he just decided to leave.
" You've always had a crush on her, what the hell. And you say nothing as she's being asked out?" Sam demanded, running his hands through his quiffed hair in agitation.
Alex sighed, his heart aching and in broken pieces. He had desperately wanted to tell Elle how he felt about her, but was pretty sure that she never would feel the same way about him. She probably thought of him as her guardian angel, a brother she never officially had.
Finn was a hot looking guy, who seemed genuine about his intentions. He had been nice enough to offer food to the Assasins, perhaps it was okay to lose her to him. He was dejected, and in a whole turmoil of emotional pain.
If Elle slept alone that night, would she have nightmares? Alex was not going to be there to comfort her, and put her back into peaceful slumber. Would Finn be nice to her tonight?
Without seeing Pinecone for a night, would she miss them? Would she miss him? Or was Alex already replaced by another man, who may take up the space in her heart which she had left for him?
" You have to get her back," Chrissy insisted, running her hands through her purple hair," If you had told her how you felt from the start, this might have been avoided."
Alex shook his head, sharpening his knife against a boulder. He knew that telling her how he felt towards her was a mistake. He felt so much for her, but if she turned him down, his life would be ruined. Elle had known him since they were three. She most likely did not have any special feelings for him.
" She might have given you a chance, to love her," Chrissy said, sitting down upon another rock," Do you know how much I want you two to get together? "
Alex pretended that he had not heard Chrissy's last sentence. He was full of regret now, but even if he finally mustered up the courage to tell her how he felt about her after thirteen years, it was too late now. She was seeing Finn. Not him.
But he did remember telling her that he liked her before. When he was four.
Alex and her were out to find more food then, with one of the knives they had picked up from a dead and dying man. They were hiding in the bushes, waiting for the right target to come by. Their gun was left behind because they had ran out of bullets, so it was useless.
He remembered the four-year-old Alex picking up a flower off the soft dirt. The flower had been bright purple with white dots, and he had found it pretty. Just like how he found four-year-old Elle pretty. He had thought of how much it reminded him or her, he had gently put it in her hair.
Four-year-old Elle had liked the flower too, pulling it out of her hair to admire it on her hand. The two of them had temporarily forgotten the task at hand, or their lives at stake.
" Why are you giving me this pretty flower?" four-year-old Elle had timidly asked him, blushing madly at the same time.
Alex remembered how hard he had blushed, his cheeks flushed and warm.
" I like you, Elle," four-year-old Alex had told her.
But as far as Alex could remember, nothing happened after that. Elle kept the flower aside, until it wilted and died. Then everything went back to how it used to be. However, Alex desperately wished that she had remembered what he had said then.
