Alex and Elle were outside, standing on the roof top of their apartment, having climbed a ladder up there. They had wanted to hang out a little, and had made sure that Chrissy was asleep before doing so. That girl has had an emotional day.
The wind blew gently at Elle's hair, bringing her hair away from her face. The night was peaceful now, or so it seemed. Right now, food was being loaded into the warehouse, as it always did every week.
It was too far to see, but surely a fight was going to break out soon, for food supplies were going to a minimal. The force members were not too concerned, they had an entire forest to hunt in. Bears, hares and all that good stuff.
" We used to be waiting, figuring out how to target people when the food supplies came, do you remember that?" Alex questioned, pointing at the general direction of the warehouse.
Elle nodded, glancing over as well. They always picked the ones who snuck off with food under their coats, killing them. Back then, all the adults were taller, bigger and stronger than they were. It was tough, trying to survive.
" We nearly hijacked the entire van once," Elle recalled, feeling herself smile at the memory.
They had planned it a long time, to hijack the entire van of food. Alex remembered the many hours he had spent, with the map on his table, figuring out what to do.
Elle had been the one who pulled his plan together, and then, as two young kids, decided to put their plan to good use.
That night was raining really heavily. Alex remembered how Elle had nearly slipped on a water puddle, and how he had caught her arm. Then they hid under a dark green sheet, waiting for the second last van to arrive.
Not the last van though, because the older teenagers used to target that. If Alex and Elle had crossed paths with vengeful teenagers, they might have died that very night. All that fore-planning had been extremely crucial.
Then, Alex remembered that they had killed the van driver, smashing his window with the back of a knife. Elle had used a leaf to wipe off the extra pieces of glass before climbing in, unlocking the door for Alex to get in.
" Haha, yeah, and the teenagers in the van behind us were so shocked to see 'toddlers' at the wheel," Alex chuckled, taking his jacket off.
The night was slightly cold, but he liked the chill against his skin. It made him more focused. He put his jacket on one of the pipes. Elle stepped into his arms, and they spent a moment of silence together.
" You know what I'm afraid of? You dying," Elle admitted, glancing up at her boyfriend.
Alex smiled a sad smile. He was afraid too. It was precisely why he had tried to push out the prospect of love from his mind for so long. If it worked out, it worked out. But if it failed, it hurt.
" It'll be okay. We survived for so long now. Longer than most," Alex told her, pulling apart.
He looked out at the city. Most of it was dark, shadowed by the little light contributed from the moon. Streetlights had died out long ago, with not enough electricity to power them. Houses with people had lights switched off so as to not call unwanted attention upon themselves.
" We rule in this city. And just think, we were just like them ten years ago, a normal person," Alex whispered, turning his head to look at Elle.
It was crazy, that after an entire decade of murdering, they were now at the top. Respected, and feared. Entrusted to protect America.
Elle leaned over the edge of the roof, looking down at the dark city underneath her. She could have died back then, but Alex had saved her. Then, she had nothing. Now, she had this city in her hands.
