Alex briefly adjusted his army uniform. The new batch of army personnel was coming in today, and he had to make sure he looked proper. He put Hazelnut on her leash and Pinecone jumped down by his feet, padding along beside him.
It had been nearly five years since Elle had decided to leave. Alex had given up on meeting her again completely. In five years, not a single post card or message came through the mail. He had no idea if she was alive or dead, and by this time, he did not really care anymore.
She was dead to him. Like his parents, she had decided to leave him. With just a simple goodbye, and gone within seconds. Alex unlocked his room door and started to walk out.
" Hey Goot. Ready to meet the new guys today? I walked by earlier and saw some hot ones," Chrissy commented, walking quickly to match his pace.
Her hair was back to its old vibrant purple. It had been five years, but she had finally accepted Daniel's death. But not completely. She had still not dated anyone since him. Nor had Alex after Elle had left him.
Pinecone rubbed its head against Chrissy's legs, and the younger girl picked up the animal. Alex shook his head, Pinecone was definitely a pampered kitten here at the army base. A hero too, for she passed messages for Alex and Elle during the war period.
Sam and Kurt came out from the cafeteria, chatting about possible attack techniques. Well, at least one relationship was going well. They waved at Alex and Chrissy before turning a corner. Those two were in charge of weapons, while Chrissy and Alex were supposed to take care of new army men. Or army women, since ladies join the army too.
Alex headed straight for the dormitories, where the new people were still settling in. Chrissy put Pinecone down on the floor, and turned on their room light. A few of the men groaned in their sleep, tossing and turning.
" Rise and shine, little shits. It's the official start of your training, " Chrissy shouted. Instantly, men started to sit up, realising where they were. They climbed out of their beds, some clumsier than others. Chrissy and Alex sighed.
One of them was still sleeping though, while the others stood at attention. Alex shook his head, making his way to the sleeping man. Going over to the sink, he filled a cup with water and threw it over the guy's head. The young man was startled awake.
If there was one thing Alex hated most, it would be heavy sleepers. Annoying and hard to shake awake in the case of an emergency, and most likely to get the team killed.
" Stand up!" Alex shouted at the boy. This was the army base, no time for kind motherly words. Everything here was loud, brutal and may contain swear words. They had to prepare for war, just in case.
Just then, Alex noticed someone standing next to Chrissy. He turned his head slowly, heart thudding in his chest. It couldn't be.
" Greet sergeant Fowler," Chrissy growled. Alex straightened up and looked at her.
It was her all right. And the soldiers should know that Nightmare Pair had broken it off a long time ago. The soldiers in this room looked excited, as if preparing for incoming drama. But Alex said nothing, only standing beside Chrissy. They had to start with their early morning run.
" Let's go, " Alex told them. The soldiers automatically fell into two lines, and the three sergeants began to run.
He could feel her eyes on him, but he kept his gaze away from her. Alex was pissed, and he had completely no intention of talking to her. Or forgiving her. In that first year of her leaving, he was in so much emotional pain. So bad.
He had missed her a whole lot. Alex checked the mail every day, eagerly, hoping to receive something from her. And every time was the same, no news. He had kept a purple flower here in his room at the army base, looking at it and thinking of her.
